CARSON CITY — Nevada health officials will use a federal grant recently awarded to the state’s Medicaid program to grow Substance Use Disorder services.

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to several hundred Tahoe City residents on a warm summer evening in August. I was there for a celebration that has been a long time coming.

Residents gathered in the parking lot of the blighted Henrikson Building to take a ceremonial swing of the hammer — to say goodbye to an eyesore of a building whose useful life came to an end years ago. They were also there to celebrate what will soon take shape as Tahoe City’s first new hotel in more than 60 years.

Carson City's newest poke restaurant, The Poke Beach, is now open for business in their location at 1442 E. William Street Unit 2 next to Starbucks.

The new restaurant has been under construction since April, but now they are officially open for business. It is the second restaurant of its kind in the Carson City area.

Bel Solé is the newest expansion of Carson City’s Bella Salon and Spa which is now offering a year-round boutique, all natural spray tanning, sugar-hair removal, and lash extensions.

They’ll be hosting their grand opening party on Saturday, Sept. 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at their location at 1910 E. College Parkway in Carson City.

Moving into Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, there's another chance for thunderstorms headed our way and then a bit of a cool down going into the weekend. Looking around the capital city Thursday there's a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, auditions for V&T Railway's Polar Express, art showings, a host of activities at the Carson City Library, a Muscle Powered morning hike and more.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. the Dangberg Home Ranch Celtic Faire will be the final special event of the 2019 Dangberg Summer Festival. A celebration of the Irish, Scottish and Welsh people who helped to settle Carson Valley will offer a day filled with entertainment and activities for all ages.

Going into Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, we're looking at sunshine and temperatures in the low 90s. Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.

Apprehensive students throughout the Carson City School District began the 2019-2020 school year with reassuring and motivational school assemblies, meet-and-greets and back-to-school nights.

Carson High School Principal Gavin Ward stood at the north entrance high-fiving students as they entered high school, some of them for the first time. In fact, counselors, teachers, and other administrators stood at each of the school entrances welcoming students to the best high school in the state, hyperbole aside.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including HopeFest9 on Friday, dirt bike races at Fuji Park, a job fair at Eagle Valley Children's Home, and the final weekend of the Jazz and Beyond festival and Levitt AMP outdoor concert series at the Brewery Arts Center.

Having made it through the first day of school in Carson City, it is onward and upward as we head into Tuesday, August 20, 2019. Events around the area include fitness hikes and bike ride, a free floral design class at Silver City School House, art showings and Congressman Mark Amodei at Casino Fandango. Also featured is the launch of the Jukebox International Film Festival at the community center, a jazz quintet performance at Comma Courtyard and the 115th birthday celebration of Count Basie as part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival. Enjoy the day.

Saddle up with a giddy up to the Comstock August 24-25, as the rodeo returns to Virginia City bringing with it a full force of western and cultural heritage beginning with a longhorn cattle drive right down the center of town. The 4th annual Virginia City Rodeo and Fiesta del Charro features a mutton bustin’ tournament, classic bull fighting, traditional rodeo events and a celebration of Hispanic heritage.

The Wicked Tinkers headline the Levitt AMP Carson City outdoor Music Series this Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center’s Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater. Only two shows remain for Carson City concert series and this Saturday's show, you won't want to miss.

During Thursday’s Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting, a resolution was passed to rename the archery range at Centennial Park the “Tim Meigs Carson City Archery Range.”

Representatives of Carson City’s Clear Creek Bowmen archery club, along with the Parks and Recreation department, brought the resolution to the Board in an effort to honor Tim Meigs, a long-time Carson City citizen who was entered into the Archery Hall of Fame, and who has based his archery business out of the capital city for over sixty years.

The 2019 Carson City Fair finished its third year on the last Sunday in July with a record number of participants, exhibits and spectators. The Fair’s claim to fame is a focus on local youth livestock shows and traditional exhibits. This year, most people didn’t miss the carnival, due to the free games provided on the grassy area.

Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. Eddy Street Vintage Market is helping raise funds for Main Street Gardnerville, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization. A portion of the proceeds from the $5 entry fee from their 5th Annual Artisans & Antiques Festival will be donated to Main Street Gardnerville to further their work creating and preserving a beautiful and economically vibrant downtown.

Heading into Tuesday Aug. 6, which means the safest family celebration of the year at the 17th annual Carson City National Night Out. This is an event like no other, where agencies who work in areas of public health and safety gather at Mills Park to meet with Carson City residents. This event features 3 hours of information booths, games, demonstrations, food and fun. Also happening Tuesday is a free robotics mini-camp for kids in nearby Silver City, Reciprocity Inc. will host a fundraiser at Rustically Divine, there's the Culinary Traveler’s Club's Polynesian Paradise featured at Bleu Café; the Carson City Classic Cinema Club will feature a Sci-Fi favorite at the BAC, plus fitness outings and more.
