Douglas County was notified on Nov. 1, 2020 that a Douglas County employee who has been involved in the election processes, tested positive for COVID-19. Douglas County has worked closely with Carson City Health and Human Services on contact tracing related to the positive case.

Thunderstorms arriving into the region Wednesday have brought a number of calls for downed trees, power lines, outages and a fire reported in the Silver Springs area of Lyon County.

It's been a mixed bag of activity so far Wednesday with valley rain, Sierra snow and power outages extending throughout Carson City into Lyon and Douglas counties.

UPDATE: Fire officials said Thursday the Canyon Fire is 40 percent contained and burned around 440-acres. Full containment is expected by Saturday.

A brush fire that erupted Wednesday afternoon in south Douglas County near Topaz Ranch Estate in the Minnehaha Canyon area has firefighters from surrounding agencies, including Carson City, responding.

Four Carson City residents were arrested Sunday night after a woman allegedly entered a Topaz Ranch Estates home claiming she was owed money and waving a pistol.

A storm is coming Wednesday and Thursday which could potentially cause flooding for snow-clogged drainage areas, poor drainage areas, and small streams below 6000 feet, however no rivers have been predicted to flood at this time.

UPDATE FRIDAY 2:15PM: Voluntary evacuations are underway west of Topaz, Calif., according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. Sierra Front reports the fire, believed to have started by lightning on Tuesday, has burned an estimated 7,200 acres and is zero percent contained as of Friday afternoon.

UPDATE: The Douglas County Sheriff's Office acknowledged Tuesday that it had erroneously reported that a man had died from a shooting at Topaz Ranch Estates in south Douglas County.

The man, Michael Dixon, 50, suffered a life threatening gunshot wound and was taken by air ambulance, where he is at Renown Medical Center in Reno.

At 6:46 pm the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a call from 1205 Slate Road in Topaz Ranch Estates in southern Douglas County of two victims with gunshot wounds.

With localized drainage flooding happening in many areas around the capital city region today, the Carson River near Carson City is rising and expected to reach peak flood stage Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

With heavy rain arriving and local flooding looking likely, Carson City Public Works crews were out in full force Sunday morning clearing streets of debris and slushy snow piling around drainages.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather system developing in Northern Nevada and the consequent danger to life and damage to property, said Carson City Deputy Emergency Manager Stacey Belt.

With one last dry day left ahead of the approaching atmospheric river weather system, emergency management officials in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties are urging residents to prepare now in anticipation of weekend flooding throughout the region.

Imagine a long, narrow river in the sky about 250 to 375 miles wide, moving along with the weather. It transports water vapor with a flow several times faster than the water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. A river that, when it hits land, releases 30-50 percent of the area's annual precipitation in the form or rain or snow in just a couple of days.

With the current storm still producing rain around the Carson City region, forecasters have turned their attention to the next system that will arrive this weekend bringing warmer conditions, rising snow levels and the potential for flooding.

NV Energy has been experiencing power outages since Wednesday night in Carson City, Douglas County and in the Yerington area.

In the Smith Valley area around 500 customers were without power beginning at around 8 a.m., Thursday morning including customers in Topaz Ranch Estates. The outage is due to downed wires, said NV Energy spokeswoman Faye Andersen.
