'Project Graduate' prepares Western Nevada College students

Western Nevada College students who are beginning fall classes should be better able to succeed, thanks to a new admission and college preparation process.

‘Project Graduate’ is reinventing the way new degree and certificate-seeking students are preparing for classes. In addition, WNC now requires advising services to new students before they register.

“It’s changed our admissions process, changed our entire counseling and advising processes,” said Deborah Case, director of Counseling Services. “It’s very impactful in the way we do business for new students.”

Carson Little League thanks our Community for their awesome support

I wanted to take some time to send out a special thank you to the awesome Businesses and people in our community who helped support our Junior and Senior Little League All Stars advancement to the Western Regional Tournaments in Vancouver WA and Ontario, CA this year! With out their support this would not have been possible for these fine athletes. Our Juniors (13-14 year olds) and Seniors (15-16 year olds) both Finished 1 and 3 in their tournaments and failed to advance to the Little League World Series but had an experience that most kids never have had.

Fish are active and conditions are perfect.
The surface temps are averaging 59 degrees, and climbing to 61.5 degrees by midday. Clarity is very good, to 13.5 ft. Still cool enough on the surface to still be holding some nice Kings on the west side. 2 salmon were caught trolling Almanor West up to 2 lbs.
Trolling has been more effective than bait fishing deep holes and should remain that way until surface temps really spike. Like above 65 degrees.

The future of Carson Now

On Monday I was notified that I had been selected for a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University for the 2012-13 school year. It's an amazing opportunity to further the work I have done with Carson Now, at the top school in the world for Internet innovation. Situated in Silicon Valley, it's where Google, Yahoo! and more than 5,000 other companies were born.

Event Date:
April 2, 2012 (All day)

A father of 5, loving husband, and devoted Christian, is in the hospital right now after suffering multiple strokes and will be needing spinal/brain surgery. He was diagnosed with Klippel-Feil syndrome. This is a rare disorder in which the spine has abnormalities in it that are formed in the womb. His skull and first two vertebrates are fused together, and multiple more further down his spine. The abnormality is putting pressure on part of his brain. He currently has no health insurance. In an effort to help I have put together a raffle fundraiser to help towards his medical bills.

Movie Review: 'John Carter' a $250 million botch but sometimes fun

Make no mistake about it, "John Carter," playing now at the Fandango multiplex in Carson City, is a film with a nine-figure budget that takes itself seriously, although audiences may not. It's ripped from the pages of a 1912 newspaper series by Edgar Rice Burroughs of "Tarzan fame" (newspapers ran fun things like that in better times).

Movie Review: 'Act of Valor' mixes recruiting with SEALs

The action-thriller film "Act of Valor," now playing at now the Galaxy Fandango cineplex in Carson City, merges real-life SEALs (we all know who the SEALs are, thanks to the Osama bin Laden assassination) with Hollywood actors in action photography taken during maneuvers at the SEAL training grounds.
No SEALs are identified by name, although there is a surprisingly length listing of SEALs who have died in action at the end of the film.

The Current Republican Leadership, the Catholic Church, Religious Conservatives and the Perils of Self-Refuting Logic

In the United States a political party does not become the majority party in this country by becoming ideologically pure. They become the majority by becoming larger, inclusive, and superior to their political opponents not only in size, but should also be anchored in and unafraid of intellectual and discursive dialogue, devoid of reactionary emotionalism. Then and only then, can conservatism present and extend to the electorate our concepts in such a way that we will be accepted by the majority of our fellow citizens.
