Broad offerings for summer term at Western Nevada College

Western Nevada College is making it easier to work toward a college degree and career skills. This summer, the college offers a variety of courses on campus and online, beginning Monday, June 8, through Saturday, Aug. 1.

A wide range of subjects will be available to students on the Carson City campus, including computer science, advanced mathematics, geology, biology, sign language, music, accounting, auto collision and composition, and more.

Nevada governor, NDOT applaud communication plan developed by UNR students

The Nevada Department of Transportation plans this summer to implement a new brand and communications plan developed by strategic communications students at the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno.

ESL in-home program continues through summer

During the school year when schools are closed, parents of ESL school children living in Carson, Douglas and Washoe counties are also taking ESL classes for adults. When public schools are closed these adults will need English Conversation practice so they do not lose some of their skill.

Registration underway for 21st Carson City Gourmand Golf Scramble

Registration is underway for the 21st Gourmand Golf Scramble. The tournament, which is hosted by the Cracker Box, Café at Adele’s and Js’ Old Town Bistro, benefits the Carson City Community Counseling Center.

This year’s event takes place on Sunday, May 31, on the Eagle Valley West Course. Registration is $150 and includes breakfast, a gin fizz, lunch, gourmet treats along the course, and a fabulous tee prize. All skill levels are encouraged to play.

Senator Square: Speech and debate, future business leader teams prepare for nationals

There is no school on Monday, May 11 for Carson High School freshmen, sophomores and juniors as the seniors will be presenting their senior project boards to community members.

CHS Speech and Debate will be holding several fundraisers to help cover the cost of the National Tournament this June in Dallas.

Outdoors with Don Q: California fishing season begins Saturday

This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the Golden State once again. On Saturday, April 25 the 2015 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

That season will then remain open until Saturday, Nov. 15. If you’re new to this area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to fish on that Opening Day or for the entire Opening Weekend:

Carson City Parks and Recreation Easy Walk schedule through June

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department hosts its Easy Walks program each Tuesday with a new walking location weekly around Carson City. This Tuesday, April 21, the walk will be at the Stewart Indian School, beginning at 8:30 a.m. meet in parking lot at 5366 Snyder Avenue.

Walks are easy paced, on level ground, of approximately 1 hour duration, and of no cost to participants. All skill levels are welcome and leaders are willing to work with participants to develop an individual walking program.

Registration fee lowered for Carson City AYSO soccer

Children interested in playing AYSO soccer in Carson City will be able to do so this year at the lowest ever registration cost. Participants this year will pay $25 compared to the $75 registration fee last year, said Molly Walt, regional commissioner for the American Youth Soccer Organization, Region No. 140.

“AYSO is a quality recreational soccer program,” Walt said. “We want to continue to make it affordable.”
The discount was made possible, she said, through the program’s annual fundraiser tournament, the Comstock Shootout.

The tournament is an adjusted handicap 4 person scramble format that offers fun for golfers of any skill level.

Carson/Storey 4-H Awards Night

On Thursday, Jan 15, the Carson/Storey Cooperative Extension held their 2014 4-H year Awards Night at Fuji Park Pavilion.

The Carson 4-H Leader’s Council sponsored a pizza dinner prior to the ceremony. The Leader’s Council supports all of our 4-H clubs and holds events to raise funds for our scholarship program. They meet once a month to plan activities and deal with requests from clubs and the community.

41st Annual Nevada Day World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest

The 41st Annual World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest takes place at 11:05am on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014 at the Carson Nugget west parking lot. Come view the old-world contest of strength, skill, and Sierra White Granite grit; free for spectators.

Contestants used 4 1/2 pound hammers and as many as 11 bits of graduated steel to drill a 3/4 inch hole in a 4,320 pound piece of Sierra White Granite.

North Valley boys soccer team out runs Carson

The boy's soccer teams of Carson High School and North Valleys High School met Saturday at Carson High School. With the match under way, it was Carson who would strike first with Ryan Galvan who found the back of the net in the 16th minute of the game.

Soon after North Valleys would return the favor with the equalizer in the 25th minute to tie up the score at 1-1. Toward the end of the first half, Ryan Galvan got yet another pretty good look, but sailed the shot just high.

Senators Roll Over Hug On The Volleyball Court

The Carson Senators took on the Hawks of Hug High Thursday at home on the volleyball court. The Senators made quick work of the Hawks, taking care of business in less than an hour 25-3, 25-12, 25-12. It was a relatively textbook victory for the Senators, who at no point really seemed to struggle to put the Hawks away.

Last year 82 volunteers from various organizations participated to help restore Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers, CA.
