Carson City School District honors Employee and Educator of the Year

CARSON CITY — Tedra “Teddy” Cook, 7th grade teacher at Carson Middle School, was honored last night as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, Bridget Gordon, 21st Century Solutions Program coordinator at Carson High School, was recognized as the Classified Employee of the Year for the district.

Capital City Community Band presents 'A Salute to Young Musicians' with Youth Choirs

Under the direction of Richard Doede, the Capital City Community Band will perform its annual “A Salute to Young Musicians” concert with two choirs from Carson City, Fritsch Elementary School with Nicole Melsheimer, Conductor and Mark Twain Elementary School with Christina Bourne, Conductor, and the Carson High School Clarinet Choir.

The new year keeps rolling along, and tonight we’ll hear from Mayor Bob Crowell what we can expect in the upcoming months. The State of the City address, "Carson City - A Community Working Together," will be presented in the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater and is open to all. One thing we can expect is an influx of legislative staff, lobbyists, and lawmakers flooding Carson City. The next Legislative session begins in one week, so expect a little more traffic on the roads and our new downtown crosswalks to get a lot more use.

On Tuesday, February 7, the Capital City Arts Initiative [CCAI] will present a talk by artist Phyllis Shafer. Her illustrated talk, "Painting on the Outside", is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 7pm at the Community Development building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor St, Carson City. There will be an informal reception for Shafer preceding the event at 6pm. The presentation and reception are free, and the public is cordially invited.

It’s a winter wonderland in our neck of the woods, and probably a little messy to drive in. Thankfully, the Carson City and Douglas County School Districts have given you an extra two hours to get the kids to school. It’s not really expected to get above freezing, so be extra careful on what will likely be icy roads. This is the last scheduled week of the Arlington Square Ice Rink, so, if the weather allows, try to get in one last trip. Be safe out there, Carson City, spring is just around the corner.

The Carson Animal Shelter Initiative (CASI) meets monthly and is always looking for more people to get involved: join them at the new Animal Shelter. Award-winning Canyon White returns to Living the Good Life for an acoustic set. Chili’s restaurant is hosting a fundraiser for Eagle Valley Middle School: helping out is as simple as buying dinner.

Stay safe out there, and thank you to all the city and state staff, volunteers, and good neighbors that are working hard to keep the damage to a minimum.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, ART from SNC, at the Community Development Building [the Brick], 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine student artists from Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, Nevada, have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public from December 1, 2016 – January 30, 2017.

Capital City Arts Initiative has a display at the court house, inside the Sierra Room at the Community Center, and inside the BRIC building by City Hall. Check out the exhibit at the Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Artist Association’s featured artist inside the Carson Visitor Center. Carson City is awash with art, so go see what is making our valley beautiful.

Jim Barlow to Coach WNC Soccer Club

Western Nevada College is pleased to welcome Jim Barlow as the new head coach of their men’s and women’s soccer clubs. Barlow brings more than 18 years of coaching experience to Western, having coached NAIA, NCAA and NJCAA teams.
