Movie Review: 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' heady, violent, excellent

Director David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is an exciting thriller with dramatic overtones. It's based on the novel by Stieg Larsson which was a big best seller.

Daniel Craig stars as a Swedish journalist facing a big fine over slander in an article he wrote about a Swedish industrialist. Rooney Mara plays Lisbeth Salander, computer wizard and extreme individualist tendencies.

Movie Review: 'Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 1' slow but exactly what the fans want

The latest take on the popular teen-aimed "Twilight" sci-fi-fantasy-horror film series is in town and it's playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex.

It's called 'Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 1," and it brings back most of the cast of the earlier movies, although this is P-13 stuff with a lot of eroticism as well as all those fanged wolves. A teen film it is not, but you can bet a lot of teens are going to see it.

Woman's complaint about WNC sex class gets the TV treatment

KRNV Reno picked up on the story about Karen Royce, the student at Western Nevada College who complained about a human sexuality course where she said she was required to masturbate. (Check out the comments at the end of both of those links to hear from other students who think about the scandal.)

Here is video of the story:

The story also was mentioned on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, though he referred to WNC as "Western Nevada University." Congrats, WNC, Leno just gave you a promotion!

The Nevada Tax Commission is scheduled to vote on a measure on Dec. 12 that would limit some of the tax deductions that mining companies take. During the last legislative session, lawmakers learned the mining companies were taking deductions for activities not related to mining in Nevada, such as executive pay. The Nevada Mining Association says the changing in deductions could cost mining companies and extra $48 million a year.

Nevada mining operations are taxed on net proceeds, which allows them to deduct expenses, whereas most other states tax gross income. A controversy erupted earlier this year when it was revealed that the state didn't have any qualified auditors to oversee what the mining companies were claiming for expenses.

Silver State Charter School's plan to move into their new location on Mallory Way has been delayed until early next year. The school's principal Alan Staggs is frustrated with some of the "loopholes" because the building has to be retrofitted to bring it up to a higher standard because it will be used as a school and not an office. The Nevada Insurance Division vacated the building last year when workers were sickened by a chemical used to clean bird droppings. The Staggs said that problem has been fixed.

Gov. Brian Sandoval led the celebration of a new Native American cultural exhibit at Reno-Tahoe Airport on Monday. The governor said he got the idea for the exhibit from visiting other airports where there were similar displays. Book Review: 'Breaks, Brains and Balls' the story of Mustang Ranch's Joe Conforte

Joe Conforte is unquestionably one of the originals who made Nevada what it is, for better or worse. His book "Breaks, Brains and Balls," written with the help of local author David W. Toll, is a truly amazing report of how he turned a seedy brothel the Mustang Ranch just off I-80 east of Reno into a Midas machine, and in the process subverted Nevada law or made new Nevada law.

Hipocrisy Pays!

He left office in disgrace after a highly publicized affair with his Argentine mistress. He told his staff and the press he was “hiking the Appalachian trail” in June 2009 when he was in fact visiting his mistress, in Argentina.

He was considered a potential 2012 Republican presidential contender before a scandal ended his political aspirations.

Instead of doing the honorable act of resigning from his political office, he refused this option and finished his term as governor, leaving office in 2010.

Movie Review: 'Parnormal Activity Three' film falls short of wanted Halloween chills

I missed the first two iterations of "Paranormal Activity," so I was a little lost looking at No. 3, now playing at the Fandango Galaxy in Carson City. I also missed the first five minutes so I was a little baffled by the repetitious scenes of nothing happening as a video camera scanned two rooms.

This is a prequel to the first two go-arounds and while it has its share of things that go bang in the night, it is more confusing than amusing or scary.

Reflections on 8th Burning Man visit

By Sam Bauman
First time I went to Burning Man on the Black Rock playa, I slept in my SUV. Not bad but second and third it was in my tent, a very gritty and uncomfortable week. Fourth I weaseled my way into a friend's a fold-out trailer, which was better. But from then on I teamed up with a retired airline pilot, who had a nice 27-foot Winnebago. Four of us the first three times, just two the last.

Movie Review: 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' a nice reworking of an old story

"Crazy, Stupid, Love," a romantic comedy currently showing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, is a romantic comedy built on the well-trod idea of love, fall out of love, fall in love and live happily ever after, a la such as "The Phlaelpia Story" of times gone by. The cast, chiefly Steve "Cyrano-nosed" Carrell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, is excellent, pros to a turn.

Movie Review: 'Friends with Benefits' breaks old ground, but Mila Kuinis is hot

At the Carson City Fandango Galaxy cineplex, I was a bit confused watching the new movie. Once I got the idea of the plot --- guy, girl agree to sex with no emotional strings attached, I thought I had been caught in a time warp. I'd seen this movie, only it was titled "No Strings Attached" and starred Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.

Moview Review: 'X Men: First Class' a hot and heavy fantasy film

I missed a couple of the "X Man" interations so I can't offer much in the way of comparisons, but world opening audience size was down from the last version. That said, 'X Man: First Class," now screening at the Fandango Galaxy multiplex in Carson City, is a film of its times, a melange of fast cuts, amazing technology which reveals its comic-book birthright with fantasy and some fact.

Movie Review: 'Thor' of the magic hammer alive and well

It's hard to say whether the mythical adventure film "Thor" currently playing at the Fandango Galaxy in Carson City is the best adventure film since "Fast Five," or whether it is a messy marketing adaptation of Scandinavian myth with no logic and sense to the story other than luring the kids in.
