Miss USA Nia Sanchez celebrates Nevada homecoming with Carson City visit

Recently crowned Miss USA 2014 Nia Sanchez spent Wednesday in Carson City, the first celebration trip since becoming the first Miss USA from Nevada. She was crowned June 8.

Sanchez was officially greeted into the city by Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Carson City Visitors Bureau Director Joel Dunn, Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada members and the Carson High School Senators cheerleading team.

Newly crowned Miss USA 2014, Nia Sanchez, will return to her home state of Nevada for her official homecoming trip Wednesday, July 16 through Sunday, July 20. This will be Sanchez’s first celebration trip since becoming the first Miss USA from Nevada since she was crowned on Sunday, June 8.

Miss USA’s homecoming will kick off with a visit to the state’s capital, Carson City. Sanchez will have the opportunity to meet several government officials while visiting the historic Nevada State Capitol.

Lyon County authorities investigate fatal shooting in Silver Springs

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal shooting that happened Friday night in Silver Springs.

Deputies were called shortly after 9 p.m. to a Catfish Street address after dispatch received a call from a woman who advised she had shot her adult son, said Lyon County Sheriff's Lieutenant J. L. Pattison.

Maximum sentence handed down in 2013 Carson City killing on Super Bowl Sunday

David Michael Grimes, 33, was sentenced in Carson City District Court Tuesday to the maximum sentence for voluntary manslaughter in a Feb. 3, 2013 shooting outside a Washington Street home following a Super Bowl Sunday party.

School shootings, gun control and you

Thirteen months ago, Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and killed twenty students and six members of the school’s staff. Earlier, Lanza shot and killed his mother before driving to the school on his deadly mission. His death at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head ended the brutal killing spree. In the days following the horrific event, calls for sane gun control from a variety of sectors of our society were heard across the country.

Reid addresses Senate, supports ban on assault rifles, high-capacity magazines; wants improvements to mental health services

Nevada Sen. Harry Reid said Wednesday on the floor of the U.S. Senate that he supports an assault weapons ban, limits on high-capacity ammunition clips and polices to improve access to mental health services. He spoke of mass shootings that have happened across the country and close to home in Carson City.

"As the case of the Carson City, Nevada IHOP tragedy reveals, the deficiencies in this nation’s mental health treatment system are another important part of the discussion about how to prevent gun violence," Reid said on the Senate floor. "We have simply not done a good job of providing funding for and access to mental health services. We have also done a poor job of removing the stigma that keeps many Americas from seeking the treatment they need."

Man found guilty of battery in local bar

Christopher Lash, 28, has been found guilty of Battery Causing Substantial Bodily Harm stemming from a March 25, 2011 altercation at a local bar in Carson City.

Carson City Sheriff’s deputies were called to a local establishment at 2:00 A.M. with reports of a man striking another man in the face with a pint glass. The suspect fled the scene when deputies arrived, but the deputies received statements from witnesses indicating Christopher Lash struck the victim, Nicholas Moen, in the face with a pint glass causing severe injuries.

New Gun Rights Group Intends to Actively Lobby Legislature

The National Rifle Association (NRA) this month formally approved the Nevada Firearms Coalition (NFC) as its new, officially sanctioned state association in Nevada.
The group is a registered nonprofit Nevada corporation and according to its website is dedicated “to the ownership and safe use of firearms for self-defense, competition, recreation and hunting.”
