Deborah Stevenson offers a refreshing, six-week series, featuring simple movements and guided meditations for balance and renewal. This Sheng Zhen Qigong course is suitable for beginners who have an interest in meditation but "can't sit still." Qigong means “energy in motion” and its purpose is to open and purify the heart. Sitting, standing, and lying down meditations will be introduced. This class is perfect for seniors. Non-yogis are welcome; the form is easy to learn.

Partnership Carson City is hosting a Diabetes Self-Management Class developed by Stanford University. Class meets for two and a half hours on Fridays, for six weeks. The first class is on May 19 and meets from 9:45 to 12:30 pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1201 N. Saliman Rd., Carson City. The class covers monitoring blood sugar; coping with anger, fear and frustration; communication with health care professionals, family, and friends; use of medications; relaxation techniques; healthy eating; physical activity and more.

This is a 6 week class that explores the very basics of yoga. Class size is limited to allow for personal attention. Learn about your core (what the heck does that mean, anyway?) how to move in and out of basic poses, and learn a few classic introductory yoga postures. There will be opportunity to modify all poses and movements based on the needs of your body – learn how to adapt yoga to what your body needs instead of trying to fit your body into an unrealistic pose. Gentle Movement for Opening the Heart; Free Introductory Demonstration of Sheng Zhen Qigong

Deborah Stevenson has been practicing energy healing through Reiki and qigong since 2000 and teaching since 2003. She currently teaches Sheng Zhen Qigong in the tradition of her teacher, Master Li Jun Feng. Sheng Zhen means unconditional love.

Stevenson will bring the experience of opening the heart to beginners in a simple seated qigong form that is easy to learn. A series of slow, gentle movements and guided meditations promote relaxation, allowing the body to balance and heal.

The purpose of the practice is to open and purify the heart.

Canoe Trips at Lahontan State Recreation Area in June

Nevada State Park staff invite the public to enjoy days full of fun, relaxation and nature at Lahontan. Canoe trips will launch from just below the Lahontan Dam and travel along the Carson River about five miles down to the Irrigation Diversion Dam.

This trip is relatively flat; a great opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of canoeing. Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided by Nevada State Parks, but participants will need to bring sun block and drinking water. Space is limited, so please make reservations by calling 775-867-3500.
