On Monday, Girl Scouts from Troops 1951 and 35 gathered to plant 15 trees at Carson’s historic Lone Mountain Cemetery.


I found photos last week of our landscape when we bought the house in 1988. There were trees lined up like soldiers along the borders of the property and lawn everywhere else. No flowers, no shrubs. Everything was flat. Although this was boring, it certainly was easy to maintain. Thirty-two years later, I look back at that landscape and think, why did I plant so much?

The Jazz and Beyond festival committee announces that the winner of the 2020 poster and program cover art contest is Karen Kreyeski, for her entry, “After Midnight Jam.” The winner of the T-shirt design is Evan Tynan, for “2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival Logo.” These were selected from ten entries to highlight the 17th annual Carson City music and art festival.

My neighbor Mark, now known as “Chip” after Chip Gaines from “Fixer Upper” on HGTV, acquired his new moniker after building an amazing fence to enclose his wife’s garden (with her help of course!). Since we have major animal challenges in our neighborhood — ground squirrels, rabbits, deer and bears — a strong defense system is essential for successful vegetable production. The impressive garden fence that "Chip" built should keep all the critters out.

In addition to the many adaptations local 4-H programs have made in Nevada communities the last couple of months amid COVID-19 to keep 4-H youth engaged, the Nevada 4-H Youth Development Program has developed a variety of activities to engage 4-H youth throughout the state during the summer months.

My friend Millie is a plant explorer. She experiments getting groceries to grow. When she told me she was growing celery from the butt-end of what you buy from the grocery store, I was fascinated. How? In water? In soil? She went on to say she also grows sweet potatoes. I had tried that in high school, so that didn’t surprise me. But when she showed me a picture of her sweet potato plant I was impressed.

Even with the stay-at-home order in place, businesses, families and youth can engage in a number of educational activities online to enhance their daily lives and help themselves, and others, through these challenging days. Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, University of Nevada, Reno Extension faculty, staff and volunteers have been hard at work to bring educational workshops, programs and resources useful during this time, into Nevadans’ homes.

A certain popular Netflix documentary, Tiger King, has taken the quarantined world by storm, in which several bizarre big-cat owners face off, alleging many criminal enterprises at each other with the back drop of exotic animals who sometimes maim their keepers.

It makes one wonder, what are local laws for keeping exotic animals? For the cost of $2,000, could you in Carson City procure yourself a baby tiger?

Nevada Humane Society is asking for your help in finding homes for 1,000 dogs and cats during the Home 4 the Holidays Pet Adoption Drive, from Nov. 23 through Dec. 31.

More than 50 animal shelters and rescue groups participated in Nevada’s large free pet adoption event, Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days. It was organized by Maddie's Pet Project in Nevada, a three-year campaign aimed at helping more homeless cats and dogs find good homes and creating a safety net for pets by improving access to veterinary care in the Silver State.

With a windy cool down headed our way, activities around the Carson City area Wednesday, June 26 will make for a breezy good time. Looking at the day ahead there's a walk hosted by parks and recreation, kids events, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center, a free "rough cut" feature film screening at the Carson Nugget, Young Chautauquans at Dangberg Historic Park and more.

As we set our radar ahead to Tuesday, June 25, 2019, we say hello Carson City and welcome to a bevy of events ahead including activities for children of all ages, a Muscle Powered morning walk, evening hike and bike ride, a cyber security awareness workshop hosted by DeBug Computer, a job fair at the Carson Nugget, art showings, a delicious taste of France via Bleu Café Culinary Travelers Club and more. Heading into Tuesday, June 18, 2019 we're looking at continued warming around the region with a daytime high around 91. Temperatures are expected to actually lower toward the end of the week. Events around town Tuesday include a Muscle Powered walk, hike and bike ride, yoga, exercises for the mind and body hosted by the Carson City Emblem Club, political gatherings, art activities and more.

Carson City University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with Carson City Parks and Recreation and Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch, is offering two weekly sessions at Silver Saddle Ranch, 2648 Carson City Road in Carson City, for youth who are not able to keep or raise a small farm animal to experience working with either rabbits or goats. Area 4-H leaders will bring their animals for attendees, 9 – 14 years of age, to work with in these hands on day camps.

For Carson High School Senior Adelina Pacheco, studying the stars is a family tradition.

Her three older siblings completed senior projects on various interstellar subjects, and now it’s her turn.

Carson City Cooperative Extension’s Capital City Farm Days is set for April 11-12, 2019. This popular annual event for pre-K though 5th graders takes place at Fuji Park Exhibit Hall and Carson City Fairgrounds.

Although I have never tried Epsom salts, named for a town in England, in my landscape or garden, I have heard many gardeners rave about what they call a miracle cure for plants. Whenever I wonder about whether something is a horticulture myth, I turn to Linda Chalker-Scott, Ph.D., a well-respected horticulture researcher at Washington State University.

The Nevada Humane Society in Carson City saw another success story as part of its Home 4 the Holidays Pet Adoption Drive to find homes for 1,000 homeless pets this holiday season.

Bouncing Bunnies 4-H Rabbit Club is back and rearing to go with Brenda Moore as the new leader. The first meeting is Oct. 3, 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Fuji Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Road in South Carson City cross from Costco.

Sign-ups begin at 6:30 pm followed by the distribution of project manuals. Members will then begin making plans for raising, caring for and showing their rabbits.

Friday morning started the Carson City fair's weekend, with events such as the popular dog show, the beginning of the silent auction, and the Youth Livestock competitions.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents the 2018 Carson City Fair July 25-29. The event, held at Fuji Park, 601 Old Clear Creek Road in Carson City, is put on in partnership with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Northern Nevada Antique Tractor and Engine Club, and others to celebrate youth and agriculture.

Having an impact on a community like Carson City does not require anything monumental.

Think smaller, not larger. As in dwarf goat size.

I’m going to apologize right now. I can’t anticipate what this storm system will throw at us, so some of these planned events could get cancelled. One event that is never afraid of Mother Nature is the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. Come rain, shine, or blizzard, you’ll find can sip, stroll, and discover starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Carson Hot Springs aren’t afraid of a little snow, and a special visit from Megan the Mermaid will make the icy hot experience more memorable. Carson City’s Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Stacey Belt, has a couple of very special Spinoni Italiano dogs. One of them, as Stacey puts it — a bearded Italian girl with bushy eyebrows named Adele, will be competing in the famous Westminster dog show in February.  

We’ve got one heck of a weekend on its way, and it’s starting right now. Start off with a trip to the Governor’s Mansion with something non-perishable for the annual Share Your Christmas Food Drive: you won’t even have to leave the warmth of your vehicle. Break a leg to Wild Horse Children’s Theater and to the Proscenium Players. Both troupes begin the run of their winter plays tonight at the Brewery Arts Center. It’s a Christmas Shopping Extravaganza at Fuji Park. You’ll find a plethora of vendors, crafters, and artisans waiting to help make your holiday shopping hassle-free.

Veterans Healing Camp cordially invites the community to a special Flag Raising Ceremony with bagpipe music and free concert on Saturday, Nov. 18 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Healing Camp property located at 1775 East US Highway 50 in Silver Springs.
