• Mayors Day at the Nevada State Legislature

United States Sen. Dean Heller and U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei were the featured guest speakers at Wednesday's monthly Soup's On luncheon series sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

Their presence attracted a sold-out crowd inside the banquet room at the Gold Dust West Casino, 2171 East William Street in Carson City, as well as dozens of protesters outside of the facility.

This week's edition of It's Your City features last month's presentation on aging by the Sanford Center on Aging. The forum was held Jan. 24 at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Nevada is one of the fastest aging states in the country. Data regarding the aging of Nevada and current statewide initiatives to address aging and dementia were discussed.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Legislature set a fast pace in its first week, beginning with a historic moment in the Assembly, political puffery in the Senate and committee hearings out of the starting block.

The 79th regular session of the biennial Nevada Legislature began Monday morning, drawing dozens of lawmakers, their staff and a crowd of lobbyists to Carson City for the next 120 days to vote on bills and craft a budget for the state's 2017-19 biennium.

As I now conclude this particular article, it is just hours away from one of America's most revered events--if not the most. President-elect Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building at 12:00 noon on January 20, and Mike Pence will be duly sworn in as the Vice-President of the United States.

As I write this article, the Electoral College is deciding the route of the American Presidency and of Donald Trump as President-Elect. The Russian ambassador has been shot and killed in Turkey by a fanatic. Another European terrorist attack has taken place in Berlin, Germany, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens of others during the Christmas shopping season. Back in Aleppo, Syria, the Assad government is finishing off the horrific killings of its own people as well as rescue helpers and hundreds of Christians — many of whom are women and children.

In a small room just down the hall from mine sleeps a little child. Though I have tossed and turned all night long with pain in my arms and legs, the child sleeps peacefully.

The Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors recently named Karen Marsa as their Chief Executive Officer. She previously was Executive Vice President for the Incline Village Board of Realtors for more than 12 years.

Marsa brings to the position several years of experience in real estate association management, member and public outreach, and law firm management; and also served as Chief Administrative Officer for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

Ten years from now, you probably won't remember Christopher Suprun.

Suprun was chosen by the Texas Republican Party for the Electoral College. For most of our nation's history, this has been a procedural and honorary duty conferred upon loyal activists within the political parties when their presidential candidate carried their state.

Thanksgiving isn't a patriotic holiday per se, but it is full of patriotic feelings as Americans did and should give thanks for our shared blessings as a nation.

We are humanists and, so, optimists.

Against us in the political sphere stand environmentalists and other anti-humanists. These folks see not progress, but threat, in seemingly everything done by man.

We see man as being born into an uncertain and challenging world. In a state of nature, earthquakes, tornadoes and other disasters combine with infections and shortages of food, shelter and other basic resources to threaten man's very survival. But over centuries, humans have applied their intelligence to shape the world around them.

In light of recent political events, which need no commentary here, two rival high schools engaged in an equally important contest that set the standard for gracious rivalry to show this embattled country how it is done on the day after the election.

RENO, Nev. — The National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges has elected Joe Asher, chief executive officer of William Hill US, to the Board of Directors.

“We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Asher to the Board,” said Judge Katherine Tennyson, NCJFCJ president. “Mr. Asher will bring strong leadership and creativity to the NCJFCJ. His perspective and experience in law, with the Delaware Supreme Court, and in business will be significant assets to our organization.”

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced the appointment Friday of Bradley Crowell, as director of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, effective Dec. 12. Interim Director Kay Scherer will resume her position as Deputy Director of the Department.

Every two years, the Cato Institute in Washington, DC ranks the recent changes in state fiscal policies to give readers an understanding of the trends prevailing in each state. Last week, Cato released its newest Fiscal Report Card, and Nevada fares poorly.
