There are some things that one never thinks they will see in their lifetime. I must admit, the Carson City Freeway was one of those things. But lo and behold, the new 580 extension opened its last leg to traffic yesterday. The hot summer temperatures continue, so seek indoor entertainment during the day and keep cool.

The third annual Sassabration diversity festival launched Saturday morning with a parade from the Brewery Arts Center to Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint at Carson Hot Springs Resort in Carson City.

If you’ve been longing to crawl out from behind your air conditioning this summer, eat some mouth-watering food and experience colorful hijinks, then plan to attend the third annual 2017 Sassabration this Saturday in the parking lot of Carson Hot Springs Resort, 1500 Old Hot Springs Road in Carson City.

This week's edition of It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer features Janine Comoletti, president of Carson City PFLAG. The two discuss the upcoming Sassabration celebration on Saturday, July 15 at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, 1500 Old Hot Springs Road in the Carson Hot Springs complex.

And just like that, it’s almost the weekend. Karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar takes over their patio- a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail and sing a little song. Enjoy live music, a good drink and yummy food at Living the Good Life. Motorcycles are on the way. The Street Vibrations Spring Rally is rumbling into town and Battle Born Harley on Research Way is the place to be. Every Thursday, house band the Smoken Rabbits, gets the place jumping, but this party won’t end until Sunday. The weather is finally cooperating, so karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar will be out on their patio – J and M Productions has thousands of songs to choose from. Jimmy Mallett at Living the Good Live will croon you into yesteryear with Rat Pack nostalgia.

So many things deserve to be in this first sentence: do I mention the annual West Side Bike Month Cruiser Ride, make a Star Wars pun about May the Fourth, or focus on the Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony? What I love most about Carson City is our ability to be outdoorsy, patriotic, geeky, and none of the above - all at the same time. If you don’t find something you absolutely have to check out in today’s “Things to Do”, please look at my list again in a day or two, or sometime next week.

The Littlest Things in Carson City is more than a petting zoo, it’s a refuge. You’ll find ponies, goats, puppies, ducks, and more at this great non-profit rescue and they are always looking for animal-loving volunteers. Stop by their open house/volunteer orientation this afternoon to check it out. It’s Tartan Day at the Legislature, so don’t be alarmed if you see a few kilts around town. Karaoke at Jimmy G’s, live music at Glen Eagles and Living the Good Life, and Bike Night at Battle Born Harley are just a sample of tonight’s offerings. I just keep telling myself that the spring flowers will be amazing this year, but honestly, I’m growing weary of all this rain. Several of our hiking and bike trails have been affected, the sports fields are a muddy mess, and we are still in danger of more flooding.

After all the wind and snow, I’m absolutely in the mood for an early spring. Let’s just hope that the groundhog can’t find his shadow today. A rainy day is in store for us today, and possibly tomorrow, but don’t let that ruin the fun. Jeffery Pace welcomes you to the Grand Opening of Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery’s new location. Two screenings of ‘Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age’ this evening will be in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Community Center: it’s free and open to all. Sing your heart out downtown. Am I the only one suffering flashbacks to the Flood of ’97? It is soggy out there with no signs of letting up soon. Please drive carefully, some of those puddles may be deeper than they look. The Wired Wednesday group has a workshop for filmmakers in time for the upcoming creepy film festival and competition. The great day about three-day weekends is how quickly the next weekend appears.
