Kids Fishing Day at Carson City’s New Urban Fishing Pond

Carson City's newest recreation feature will be dedicated on Oct. 23, along with a Fishing Day, highlighting the opening of the one-acre Urban Fishing Pond.

The event, which runs from 7 a.m. to noon at the Carson City Fairgrounds at 601 Old Clear Creek Road, is free to the public. Sponsors include the Nevada Department of Wildlife, Carson City Host Lions Club, and the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department.

Nugget Project developer CEO resigns

Rick Oshinski has resigned at CEO of P3 Development Inc. of Sacramento, the firm picked to develop the Nugget Project. But he will still be close by.

In a letter to his colleagues, Oshinski said he was leaving the company to return to his former home of Carson City to join the law firm of Scarpello & Huss, Ltd.

Freida Carbery Named Nevada Prevention Fellow

Freida Carbery of Dayton has been named Nevada Prevention Fellow. As an organizer for the Dayton Food Bank through the Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties, Carbery has engaged dozens of community volunteers in the region.

Community Covenant to Lyon, Nevada Area Soldiers, Veterans and Their Families

In acknowledgment of the great gift local military personnel, veterans, and military family members give, local leaders from all walks of life will sign a community covenant or contract pledging to work together toward increasing community partnerships that improve the quality of life for soldiers, veterans and their families.

In broad terms, these will include pledges to:

- Assist veterans with reintegration into our communities.

- Advocate for local, state and federal benefits for soldiers and their families.

CARSON CITY – Nevada state Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford announced today he has selected David Byerman to serve as the secretary of the Senate beginning Aug. 30.

Several thousand visited the three-hour program designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Thousands attend National Night Out event in Carson City

Hundreds of families making up, perhaps, several thousand people, gathered Tuesday night at Mills Park in Carson City to attend the region's largest public safety event, the 27th annual National Night Out.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the National Association of Town Watch will co-sponsor the 27th Annual National Night Out crime and drug prevention event at Mills Park on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Carson City will join forces with thousands of communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. In all, more than 36 million people are expected to participate in America’s Night Out Against Crime.

Sandoval Says No Contradiction Between Marriage Protection Pledge and His Support of SB 283

Despite signing a pledge eight years ago that he would oppose domestic partnerships outside of marriage, gubernatorial contender Brian Sandoval, who last year said he supports such arrangements, said today he forgot he had signed the document.  Sandoval also claimed there was no contradiction.
“I have always believed that marriage is between a woman and a man,” said Sandoval. “My position has not changed at all. When I signed that pledge in 2002, I interpreted domestic partnerships to be an analogue for marriage.”
