Senator Square: Carson High School seniors rise to the occasion

Something which might not draw a great deal of attention around CHS is the Senior Sunrise, because how many 17-year-olds want to get up even earlier in the morning than they already have to, especially on a Wednesday knowing full well they will not be able to run home first and shower before school begins. That would be crazy, right.

Carson City Salvation Army launches annual backpack and school supply drive

The Salvation Army is collecting backpacks and school supplies for disadvantaged children through August 17. Children from Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County will receive backpacks and school supplies as needed. The Salvation Army will have a distribution of the back packs and a large portion of the back packs collected will be given directly to the School Districts for distribution to children in transition.

Annual CASI Bark, Whine and Dine event set for July 9

'Always Lost: A Meditation on War' exhibit returns to WNC in Carson City

Western Nevada College will host the final display of its acclaimed traveling arts and humanities exhibition, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” in the main gallery of the Carson City campus this summer.

Carson High business club looking for donations for national competition

Ricky Garcia, 18, is preparing for the entrepreneurship competition at the National Future Business Leaders of America Convention in Atlanta from June 26 to July 3.

“They give you a situation and you have to come up with a solution,” he explained. “That’s something you have to know how to do in life, whether it’s in business or just personal stuff.”

Salvation Army 2015 Apple Tree Back Pack and school supplies drive underway

The Salvation Army is collecting Back Packs and School Supplies for disadvantaged children through August 13th. The Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District will receive all back packs and school supplies that are collected.

Deadline for Rural Business Development Grant is May 15

USDA Rural Development Nevada is reminding rural nonprofits, public bodies and Tribes that the deadline to apply for USDA's new Rural Business Development Grant is May 15.

Grant money can be used to acquire or develop land, buildings, plants and equipment; build or improve access roads, parking areas, utility extensions and water and waste disposal facilities; provide technical assistance, establish revolving loan funds and to support rural distance learning programs that provide educational or job training.

Assemblyman PK O’Neill partners with WNC Foundation to raise funds for Always Lost Exhibit

Nevada Assemblyman PK O’Neill, District 40, has partnered with Western Nevada College Foundation in an effort to raise funds to continue the Always Lost: A Meditation on War exhibit’s national tour and ongoing maintenance.

Created in 2008 by Western Nevada College faculty and students as a class project to memorialize the costs of war, the exhibit most notably includes the Wall of the Dead comprised of photos and names of the U.S. service members that have fallen during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars since Sept. 11, 2001.
