Las Vegas artist Matthew Couper is the most recent artist to be displayed at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery in Carson City beginning June 3. Couper came from New Zealand to explore periods of Western art history. Through what he calls painterly investigations, he said, he has discovered that history often repeats. In the series, Valley of The Dry Bones, Couper uses the established Spanish Colonial narrative traditions to discuss the space between myth, religion and art politics. The Arts Council will host an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. and a reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Boaters planning to launch at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day Weekend are reminded to arrive at one of five watercraft inspection stations clean, drained and dry in order to get through the inspection process and out on the water more quickly.

All boats entering Lake Tahoe without a Lake Tahoe wire inspection seal are required to go through a mandatory inspection and purchase an inspection sticker as part of the public, private, multi-agency effort to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species (AIS). “I’m Nicolas Cage and I’m an American filmmaker,” said the actor to the Senate Committee on Revenue and Economic Development. This morning, Cage and Las Vegas mayor Carolyn Goodman testified in favor of a movie tax incentive bill, promising to use his connections in the industry to help spark a filmmaking boom in Nevada if the measure becomes law.

The Carson City Library will present Explore New Zealand at Your Library on Thursday, May 9th, at 6:00 p.m. in the library auditorium.

Library staff member Una Gauper recently visited the island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Her journey spanned months of travel and adventure. Her large network of extended family provided expert travel guidance as she experienced the culture and explored the landscape.

This Thursday night program is bi-monthly and host presentations by people from another countries or by those who have traveled to faraway places.

Carson City Library will present Explore Chile at Your Library on Thursday, March 7 at 6 p.m. in the library auditorium. Danilo A. Muñoz Ormeño was born in the city of Los Angeles in the beautiful country of Chile.

In Chile, he studied theater at Viña del Mar. He came to the USA in 2010 and lives in Carson City, Nevada. Danilo is working in the culinary arts.

Explore the World at Your Library is a bimonthly program and hosts a series of presentations by people from other countries or by those who have traveled to far-away places.

Elaine and I spent last Friday and Saturday manning an exhibit at the ninth annual Grand Slam Club OVIS Hunter and Outfitter Convention held at the Grand Sierra Hotel and Casino Hotel in Reno.

We were there to help Paul Dankowski, Game Warden and Operation Game Thief (OGT) Coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

The two of us serve as State Directors on the OGT Citizen's Board, and had volunteered to man the OGT exhibit trailer for those two days.

Carson City Library will present Explore Mexico at Your Library on Thursday, November 15, at 6 p.m. in the library auditorium. Ria White will present this program as part of a bimonthly series of presentations by people from other countries or by those who have traveled to far-away places.

Ria, a Mexican-American and former Chicagoan, enjoys reading and world cultures. She will graciously present a brief history of Mexico and its cultural heritage.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today participated in a ceremony in the old Assembly chambers in the state Capitol to swear in 58 new citizens representing countries from Bulgaria to New Zealand.

The new citizens range in age from 18 to 85 and are from 27 different countries.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation at Lake Tahoe has opened registration for the 2012 – 2013 competitive and development ski and snowboard programs. With a variety of options from the One-Day Program to the Full-Time Competitive Program, the Foundation has something for all ages and levels of skiers and riders. Registration packets are available online and at the HSSF building.

The largest Great Nevada Shakeout in its three-year history, and part of the world’s largest public earthquake drill with 18 million participants globally, is Thursday, Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m. More than a half a million Nevadans are registered to participate in the annual statewide public earthquake drill, and with just a few days to go the Nevada Seismological Laboratory would like 100,000 more people registered.

Explore the World @ Your Library: Serbia

CARSON CITY, NEVADA-Carson City Library will present Explore Serbia @ Your Library on Thursday, July 26th, at 6:00 p.m., in the library auditorium. Dragan Zivkovic will present this program. Having been born in Serbia, Zivkovic will share his unique understanding of his native country.

The July 4th Holiday and fireworks celebrations always bring an influx of boaters to the Lake Tahoe Basin. With sunny skies and warm temperatures predicted for the 4th of July holiday week, boaters are urged to Clean, Drain and Dry their boats before arriving at one of 5 roadside inspection stations in the Tahoe to avoid delays and decontamination fees.

With the Washoe Tribe's offering and support of El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago, a move is underway to rename Lakeview Commons Park at South Lake Tahoe in time for an official June 20 dedication, South Tahoe Now reports.
Given its 6,000 year history, the Washoe Tribe has presented the name Tahnu Leweh (Pronounced Tah-New Lay-Way) which, in native language, means "all the people's place." It is a name the Tribe would like to gift to El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe as a symbol of peace, prosperity and goodness, said Darrel Cruz, Culture and Language Director for the Washoe Tribe.

Elaine and I just returned home from a special way to celebrate a special occasion. March 30 was our 10th wedding anniversary and we had wanted to do something out of the ordinary for that event.

When we were married 10 years ago, we took a 19 day honeymoon in Southeast Asia, which included Hong Kong, China; Singapore, Malaysia; Bangkok, Thailand; and the last eight days at Bali, Indonesia.

Most interesting, we took my new mother-in-law, Mary Bottoms, with us!
I bet that very few of you took your mother-in-law on your honeymoon!

North Lake Tahoe is gearing up to host the 37th Annual Mountain Travel Symposium, one of the world’s premier ski industry wholesale conferences, April 15-21 at the Resort at Squaw Creek in Olympic Valley, Calif. This is the second time North Lake Tahoe has been the designated conference host, having held the event with its 1,200 attendees back in 2006.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District has released a series of educational posters which identify some of the biggest threats to Lake Tahoe Basin, as well as what visitors, residents and even kids can do to help. Titled “Tahoe’s Most un-Wanted,” the first three posters feature aquatic invasive species, fine sediments from runoff and invasive weeds, and are free to pick up or request for local schools, businesses and other organizations who would like to display them publicly.

All Nevada residents, businesses, schools and organizations are urged to register now to be part of the world’s largest public earthquake drill - “The Great ShakeOut.” The University of Nevada, Reno’s Seismology Laboratory is again teaming Nevada up with California and new partners Oregon, Idaho, British Columbia and Guam to build awareness and get residents to practice how to respond in an earthquake.

Paddlers at Lake Tahoe who enjoy the peace and solitude of skimming over crystal clear waters can now join the Tahoe Keepers stewardship community to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species, according to an invasive species multi-agency committee.

Boat inspectors at the Spooner Lake inspection station prevented a boat with 37 quagga mussels from entering Lake Tahoe on Aug. 7. The boat had arrived from Lake Mead, a water body known to be infected with aquatic invasive species. This incident was the first evidence of quagga on a boat attempting to enter Lake Tahoe this year, according to officials at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
