Carson Mall repainting removes last reminders of Gottschalks

The exterior of the Carson Mall has been getting a makeover recently, and today a crew was covering up the remnants of the old Gottchalks sign on the south side of the mall.

This is just one visible change going on at the Carson Mall. There is also work being done to extend the patio outside the Paradise Cove Cafe. In addition, Alie's Flowers is having a grand re-opening tomorrow at 4 p.m. in their new mall location. Last week, Home Treasures had a grand opening in their new location, too. And the new Thai Thai restaurant has been open for a few weeks.

Outdoors with Don Q: Great day at Lake Tahoe, except for the camera

Last week, Kevin Law of Carson City and I joined Gene (“Gino”) St. Denis of South Lake Tahoe, California for a morning of Mackinaw (Lake) Trout fishing at Lake Tahoe.

Gene is a longtime, good, personal friend and he is a premier sport fishing guide at South Lake Tahoe, known as Blue Ribbon Charters, 530-544-6552. He has fished Tahoe for some thirty years (the last twelve years as a fishing guide) and is one of the top, if not the top, guides at that lake.

The Missing Marker(s)

The Nevada Appeal today has the story of a missing historical marker. You know those blue markers in the shape of Nevada that dot the landscape? Sometimes they go missing, either through theft or vandalism, or they’re removed during the course of nearby construction. Sometimes they are put back in place after the construction is done, as was the case with the marker in front of the Carson City Courthouse on Musser.

Nugget Project update: a look at the Meridian report

Last week we reported that the governor's office sent a letter to Nugget Project consultant Mark Lewis taking issue with certain parts of the feasibility study for moving three state agencies into the Carson City Center/Nugget Project.

The one big item missing in that story was the Meridian Business Advisors feasibility study itself, which we now have a copy of.

New Michael Hohl auto dealerships open

I was gone for part of last week, and I missed that the new Michael Hohl Honda and Subaru auto dealerships on South Carson opened up on Monday. Looks like the Nevada Appeal missed it as well, at least as far as their website is concerned. Hopefully the addition will add some new sales tax revenue to Carson City's coffers.

The Fridays@3rd Street War

The Appeal has a story this morning about Mom & Pop's owner Doug Cramer being pushed out of the Fridays@3rd Street event he started nine years ago.

I've been talking with Doug about this situation, and there are a few interesting things left out of this story.
