Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 07/01/2018 - 2:28pmSpeaker Glen Whorton of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will speak on “The Prison in Nevada History” in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m.
President of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society, Glen Whorton, will present a history of the Nevada State Prison from 1861 until its closing in 2012. The presentation will include its territorial origins, famous or infamous incidents, its wardens and inmates.

The local library can be your best friend during summer vacation; Carson City celebrated the kick-off to their summer program on Sunday, while the library in Minden will host a party this evening to get the summer events started. The State Library and Archives have started a new lunchtime program. Join them for Archives Appetizer, a monthly speaker program that will cover different topics of Nevada History. Muscle Powered features two guided hikes on Tuesdays.

Nevada history buffs can view ‘The Ox-bow Incident’
Submitted by editor on Thu, 03/29/2018 - 11:34amRENO — “The Ox-bow Incident,” a 1943 motion picture adapted from an iconic novel by the same name by one of Nevada’s most famous authors, will be shown at April’s High Noon Shootout with Neal Cobb at the Nevada Historical Society.
The film will be shown on April 19 at noon at the Historical Society, 1650 N. Virginia St., in Reno. Admission is $5, free for members and children 17 and younger.

Major William Mathew Ormsby was born in 1814 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Ormsby was a teamster, failed horse dealer, citizen at large, visionary and one of the most important figures in the founding of Nevada and its capitol, Carson City. He was killed in 1860 during the Pyramid Lake Paiute uprising.

When Jon Thompson put on his 8-foot skis and heavy leather mail pack in 1856, he skied to Genoa and into history. His two to three day 90-mile crossings (one way) carrying the mail and valuable packages of up to 100 pounds on his back through the snow have never been physically duplicated, not even with modern equipment. This extraordinary feat has become part of the legacy and spirit of the pioneer American West.

Travel back in time to enjoy a classic railroad experience. The Steptoe Valley Flyer was the train that carried 4.5 million passengers from 1906 to 1941 to White Pine County.
The Steptoe Valley Flyer will be departing from the original depot, using the original First-Class Passenger Car 5 (built in 1882), the original Baggage/Railway Post Office Car 20 (built in 1906), and pulled by their original Steam Locomotive 40 (delivered here in 1910).
