Michael S. Green, a leading Nevada historian, provides a detailed survey of the Silver State’s past, from the arrival of the early European explorers, to the predominance of mining in the 1800s, to the rise of world-class tourism in the twentieth century, and more recent attempts to diversify the economy.

Blue Moon hike at Washoe Lake State Park

This is a moderate, 2.5 mile hike through the sand dunes and dry lake bed. Bring a flashlight and good walking shoes. Sandals are not recommended.
Comstock museum in Virginia City presents collection of western art by Craig Sheppard

A native of southwestern Oklahoma and former bronco rider in Madison Square Garden, Sheppard was a prime mover in northern Nevada’s cultural community in the years following World War II.

Nevada Gov. Sandoval signs Beagle Freedom Bill into law

The legislation requires dogs and cats from research facilities to be made available for adoption. It was authored by State Sen. Mark Manendo, in honor of Calvin, a beagle that was rescued from a research facility in California, rehabilitated and placed in a caring home.
Canoe Trips at Lahontan State Recreation Area in June

This trip is relatively flat; a great opportunity for beginners to learn the basics of canoeing. Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided by Nevada State Parks, but participants will need to bring sun block and drinking water. Rain forces all UNR Commencement ceremonies to Lawlor Events Center
Submitted by editor on Fri, 05/15/2015 - 6:01amUPDATE 1PM: Due to inclement weather conditions, the Saturday morning, May 16, Commencement ceremony has been moved to Lawlor Events Center. Yesterday, the University moved both Friday, May 15, ceremonies for the same reason.
Saturday morning, with line-up at 7:45 and procession at 8:15 a.m., will be the Reynolds School of Journalism, College of Liberal Arts and College of Education.

Due to inclement weather conditions, the Friday, May 15, morning and afternoon Commencement ceremonies have been moved to Lawlor Events Center. Saturday morning ceremonies are scheduled to remain on the Quad. This is subject to change. All ceremony times remain the same.

UNR to award most-ever degrees through three Spring Commencement ceremonies

The commencement exercises will take place in three ceremonies Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 and will be held on the University’s historic Quadrangle, located on the southern part of campus. Comstock History Center Museum Opens New Historic Mining Photo Exhibit

In 1980, a documentation project was undertaken on the Comstock to record the remains of historic mine and mill sites originally built throughout Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City and Dayton during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The exhibit features 16 large-format, black and white photographs from this project.

The Colcord House served as the Carson City residence of Governor Roswell K. Colcord from his election to the Governor’s Office in 1890 to his death in 1939. It is located at 700 West Telegraph. The announcement was made Monday by Nevada's State Historic Preservation Office.
