Comstock museum in Virginia City presents collection of western art by Craig Sheppard
The Comstock History Center Museum in Virginia City will feature a new exhibit beginning Thursday, A Brushwork Roundup: Western Paintings and Drawings by Craig Sheppard. A native of southwestern Oklahoma and former bronco rider in Madison Square Garden, Sheppard was a prime mover in northern Nevada’s cultural community in the years following World War II.
He arrived at the University of Nevada in 1947 with the savvy of a seasoned cowboy and the experience necessary to teach most courses in the art department he had been charged with rebuilding.
Co-curators Jim McCormick and Fred Reid have designed an exhibition that focuses on Sheppard’s abiding fascination with horses. The exhibit will resonate with those who venture beyond urban limits and encounter still existent ranches, cowboys, and wild horses on Nevada’s rangeland.
The exhibit runs Thursday, July 16 through Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015. The Comstock History Center Museum is located at 20 N. E Street in Virginia City, two blocks downhill from the Bucket of Blood Saloon. Admission is free and the museum is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Co-curated by Jim McCormick and Fred Reid and organized by the Nevada Arts Council, A Brushwork Roundup: Western Paintings and Drawings by Craig Sheppard is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative–Traveling Exhibition Program. It is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nevada State Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.
The Comstock Historic District Commission's mandate is to encourage preservation of the Comstock Historic District, one of the nation's largest and most significant landmarks. It is also one of the most visited historic sites in the state, second to Hoover Dam. The commission issues construction permits, educates the public, and promotes special programs. The commission gives guidance to federal agencies working within the district, and provides public education focused on historic resources.
