So begins Willy Vlautin's noir novel "The Motel Life." Nevada scholar Patricia Cooper-Smith will facilitate a book discussion Thursday, April 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Carson City Library Digitorium.

Head to Sassafras for a Jazz Jam headed by Tom Miller, or maybe to Living the Good Life where Mick and Lynne will entertain you. Cowboy boots are not required if you want to get in on the country line dance lessons at Carson Lanes. If you’re a musician, the Carson City Symphony is looking for violinists and French horn players to join them at their rehearsals.

The renowned instrumental musician group will perform Friday, March 6 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno beginning at 7:30 p.m. No tickets are needed for this event and the public is invited to just show up.

The concert includes the Carson City Symphony Chorus directed by Michael Langham, and featured guest artists McAvoy Layne as Mark Twain, poet Shaun Griffin, Native American singer Christina Thomas, and readers Rita Geil and Christina Van Geel. The program begins at 4 p.m.
Mile High Jazz Band presents Autumn Jazz Tuesday at Comma Coffee

Carson Street. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under. This performance is on the first Tuesday of the month, rather than the usual second Tuesday of the month.
Autumn Jazz is part of World Music Days, an annual global event affirming the ideals of tolerance, friendship, and shared humanity, inspired by the life and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl.

Seeliger students shine bright with Christmas carols at Carson City Sheriff's Office

Led by local musician, singer-songwriter Duane "Beans" Sousa, the children did song and dance-in-place routines, introduced individual medleys and belted out several carols in front of the Christmas tree.
Among the favorites, judged by the enthusiasm of the kids were the Christmas standards "Up on the House Top," and "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer."

The Gold Rush Banjo will be presented free on Friday, Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.
Doors open at 7 p.m. Seating is first come first serve. The program is an evening of stories and songs on the historical mid-19th century banjo with musician and historian Chris Bayer.
