The Jazz and Beyond Music Festival has buddied up with something new this year. Today and tomorrow, the Jukebox International Film Festival features fifteen contestants competing in four categories. Youth Theater Carson City and Western Nevada Musical Theater alum, Grant Davis, is back in town to show support for ‘Something Like Summer,’ the Australian musical he stars in. Make sure you’re in McFadden Plaza around 5 p.m. Davis will be performing songs from the movie and music from his debut album on the Third Street Stage.

Today has all the makings of a great day. Have lunch with the Chamber of Commerce and speaker Caren Roblin will teach you about the good, bad, and ugly sides of social media. Meet artists Gail Rappa and Elaine Parks at the Nevada Arts Council this evening. A reception in honor of their shared exhibit begins at 5 p.m. Ladies are invited to join the weekly Muscle Powered bike ride in Ash Canyon, just don’t forget your helmet and some sunscreen. Let the students of Carson High Musical Theater entertain you during their last concert of the year; general admission is only $4.00.

Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. The stars will be shining bright tonight, though, Western Nevada Musical Theater Company debuts its spring musical ‘Nice Work if You Can Get It’ complete with amazing choreography, melodies, and an exceptional cast. Cinco de Mayo parties all over town offer up food and drink specials, in addition to the fun times that can usually be found on a Friday night. Start the day with a cup of joe or a yummy blended drink at Dutch Brothers Coffee and you’ll be helping find a cure for ALS.

What I love most about Carson City is our ability to be outdoorsy, patriotic, geeky, and none of the above - all at the same time. It’s finally Friday. The annual Salvation Army Turkey Drive runs 6 a.m. until six this evening: drop off your donation at the Max Casino in Carson or at the C.O.D. Casino in Minden. Get to know Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout at the Community Center; head inside to get a peek at the new art exhibit in the Sierra Room while you’re there. The Craft Fair at Carson High School is a local favorite: over 125 vendors, music, and pictures with Santa. It starts tonight and continues tomorrow.

Senator Square: Inaugural 'Week of Respect' a success at Carson High School

Carson High School celebrated its first Week of Respect Oct. 3-7. Students and staff participated in daily activities promoting positive interactions to support a safe and respectful learning environment. Highlights of the week included interactive game stations where students gathered in Senator Square and engaged in board games and brain teasers.

Under the lights of the Performance Hall at the Brewery Art Center, the four primary candidates for Carson City Mayor and for State Assembly District 40 will participate in a forum hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. It’s West Coast Swing night at Yaple’s Ballroom, so put on your dance shoes and kick the weekend off right.
