Mile High Jazz Band Presents Autumn Jazz With Singers Jakki Ford and June Joplin

As the days grow short, the Mile High Jazz Band is preparing "Autumn Jazz," a program of big-band music with vocalists Jakki Ford and June Joplin, on Tuesday, October 13, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street. General admission is $5 at the door; free for age 18 and under.

Among the tunes planned for the program are "Early Autumn," as a nod to the fall season; "Sweet Georgia Brown," long associated with basketball's Harlem Globetrotters; "The Heat's On"; and "Whodunnit?," the band's tribute to Halloween.

The long weekend is over, and we won’t have another three day weekend until Nevada Day. Weather is heating back up, so at least it won’t feel like autumn, just yet. If you want to break out of your routine, try swing dancing. Beginners lessons are taught on Tuesdays at El Charro Avita. If country is more your thing, Carson Lanes offers lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Jazz and Poetry at Comma Coffee with the Mile High Jazz Band is sure to be a good time.

Mile High Jazz Band Presents "True Lies and Lullabies" Big Band Jazz and Poetry in Carson City

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Cindee LeVal will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, September 8, 2015, 7:30-9:30 p.m., for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "True Lies and Lullabies."

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City, outdoors in the adjacent courtyard, weather permitting. Admission is $5 general and free for age 18 and under.

Friday lineup: Carson City Jazz festival features Count Basie tribute among 3 venues

Jazz & Beyond, Carson City Music Festival, continues on today, Friday, with three free events. The main, special event is the Count Basie 111th Birthday Bash, 8 to 10 p.m., on the Third Street Stage between Carson and Curry Streets in Carson City.

The Music Festival began in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of William "Count" Basie, Aug. 21, 1904-April 26, 1984.

The kids are finishing their first week of school, but the summer hasn’t quit just yet. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

As part of the citywide music festival, Jazz & Beyond, the Capital City Arts Initiative will host artists selling their art, 5-7pm, in the Carson City Community Center lobby, Tuesday, August 18 prior to the 7pm "Music of Motown" concert. The lobby will open at 5pm and the public is cordially invited.

Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival to feature Motown events

A highlight of the 2015 Jazz & Beyond Festival will be a two-part Motown special. First is a free lecture-demonstration by musician-educator John Shipley. It will feature music, visuals, a guitar raffle, a no-host bar, and a guest appearance by Lloyd Williams of Otis Day and the Knights on Monday, August 17, at the Brewery Arts Center.

The second part of the Motown special is a ticketed concert showcasing Williams, the original singing voice from the hit movie Animal House, on Tuesday, August 18, 7 p.m., at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street in Carson City.

Millennium Bugs Jazz Combo plays Artown Wednesday in Reno

The Millennium Bugs, a five-piece combo affiliated with the Mile High Jazz Band, will play traditional jazz in an Artown concert on Wednesday, July 22, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., inside St. James Infirmary in Reno. The venue, a casual spot with a vintage feel, serves eclectic mixed drinks and beer inside and on the rooftop deck. Admission is free.

Band members are Dan Lancaster on saxes, clarinet, and flute; Gil Linsley on trumpet and flugelhorn; David Bugli on keyboard and trombone; George Worth on bass and trombone; and Hal Little on drums.

Carson City's Mile High Summer Jazz band camp begins June 1

Mile High Jazz Band Association, in cooperation with Carson Middle School, is starting a new, one-week Jazz Camp, with sessions for middle- and high-school musicians, June 1-5, in the band room at Carson Middle School, 1140 W King St in Carson City. Both sessions are open to students from Carson City and surrounding areas in northern Nevada and California.

It's "big-band jazz times three" when the Mile High Jazz Band, Carson High Jazz Band, and Carson Middle School Jazz Band present the 12th annual combined concert, the Mile High-Carson High Jazz Extravaganza..

The Extravaganza is Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, 7 p.m., in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street. The event is sponsored by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and the Carson City Band Association as a benefit for Carson High instrumental music programs.

Jazz workshop Saturday for Carson City middle school and high school students

The Mile High Jazz Band presents a half-day Jazz Workshop for Carson City middle school and high school instrumental students on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carson Middle School, 1140 West King Street, Carson City.

The workshop will give students an introduction to jazz technique and an opportunity for hands-on experience playing with professional musicians. Sessions include Jazz Rhythm with drummer Lee Warner, Scales and Chords with saxophonist Nat Kline, and Improvisation with trumpeter Jef Derderian. Admission to the workshop is free.

In honor of veterans, the band will play "Bugle Call Rag," "American Patrol," and "In the Mood." To reflect the change of season, they will perform "The Heat's On," "Early Autumn," and, with band vocalist Cindee LeVal, "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening." LeVal will be featured in several selections.
