CARSON CITY — Four years ago Nevada entered into a compact to make a historic investment in education and, in return the state committed to holding itself accountable for results. The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties is partnering with Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to sponsor a "Prescription Drug Round Up" at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The conveniently located Round Up helps people bring unwanted, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal.

Collecting expired and unused medications can prevent damage to the water supply that would otherwise result from flushing them down toilets and drains.

Nevada Child and Family Services receives $2.19 million to improve rural mental health services

CARSON CITY — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration awarded $2.19 million to the Division of Child and Family Services for the Pediatric Mental Health Care Access Program, officials announced Tuesday.

During their Wednesday lunch hour, students at Carson Middle School took a pledge to help others struggling with suicidal thoughts in honor of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
