The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the Carson City NUGGET Casino, 507 N. South Carson Street. This is a temporary change in venue! Unfortunately, the Gold Dust West was already booked for the 19th. The Social hour will start at 5:30 PM and Dinner will begin at 6:30PM.

On Tuesday, visitors to the Nevada State Museum sat in the front row of history to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint. Just as it did 150 years ago, the Mint’s Coin Press No. 1 pressed silver coins, complete with the famous “CC” mint mark.

Heading into Tuesday, the capital city will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with events throughout the day. Other activities include a morning and evening walk hosted by Muscle Powered, a dinner fundraiser for the Roman family at Pizza Factory, a community dinner and meeting invite to the Order of Eastern Star, a showing at the BAC of the 1941 film classic "The Lady Eve" and a concert featuring the Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with violin soloist Elizabeth Pitcairn at Shepherd-Sierra Lutheran Church. “I am thrilled this year to be working with chefs and sponsors Collin Smith and Chris Nealon of Roundabout Catering,” said Chef Charlie Abowd, who first started the dinner 12 years ago as a tribute to his father, restaurateur Paul Abowd, and 11 years ago, decided to turn the event into an event that provides a large part of TGP’s annual operating budget.

Paying tribute to those who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, a Memorial Day ceremony was held at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City on Monday afternoon. The ceremony was hosted by the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation.

UPDATE: Organizers say Monday’s program may extend beyond 2 p.m. as guest speakers will be traveling to Carson City from other northern Nevada services.

The Memorial Day Flowers Foundation is hosting a Memorial Day Service today, noon to 2 p.m. at Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City.

Among the order of service was a noon Raising of the Colors. The service will feature a presentation of the Colors by the Carson City Division of US Naval Sea Cadets, the National Anthem, Invocation. At around 1 p.m. there will be the introduction of speakers, U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, Sen. Jacky Rosen and U.S. Congressman Mark Amodei followed by A Memorial Day Tribute by the High Desert Post 56 All Veteran Honor Guard, closing remarks and a Benediction.

Carson City-based Mission Senior Living celebrated the groundbreaking of Mountain Lakes Estates Retirement Community, located off of South Meadows Parkway, just past Sprouts, in Reno. Upon completion in the spring of 2020, the 121,000 square-feet, four-story building will offer 130 apartment homes for active adults 55 and better.

Rep. Mark Amodei has signed on to support legislation that would shield from federal penalties banks that serve the marijuana industry in states such as Nevada where it is legal. He is the last member of the Nevada delegation to back the bill.

They, and the public are invited to avail themselves of services and outreach opportunities provided by veteran service organizations in Northern Nevada. Also available are static displays of Vietnam era equipment, a Vietnam mobile museum and music from the era with US Navy Veteran and DJ, Mr. Shane Whitecloud.

An increase in political polarization that made it hard to peel off swing voters combined with Democratic successes in turning out their voters, led to Nevada GOP candidates getting walloped, said Rep. Mark Amodei, the only remaining Republican in the state’s congressional delegation.

The public town forum Monday evening at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall brought together political candidates to take questions from the audience and discuss their platforms.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, partnered with Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women Capital Branch, PFLAG Carson Region, Partnership Carson City, and the Carson City Arts and Culture Coalition are hosting the series, the last of which will be held tonight, Tuesday, October 16.

For the second year in a row, the Carson City Library was nominated to receive the National Medal for Museum and Library Service, this time by Congressman Mark Amodei.

The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, in partnership with Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women Capital (NV) Branch, PFLAG Carson Region, Partnership Carson City, and Carson City Arts & Culture Coalition will present a series of election forums this Monday and Tuesday and again Oct. 15-16.
