The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jodi Hocking, Executive Director of Return Strong, a grassroots organization born in the heart of the pandemic by a group of women with incarcerated loved ones who came together to fight for transparency and accountability in Nevada's prisons.

Students from all four classes recently nominated Carson High School Winterfest candidates for 2021 Winterfest week, Feb. 1-5, where both a King and Queen will be crowned. The theme, Destination Unknown, was decided upon; since students are not allowed to experience the vacations they love, they are bringing their vacation destinations to CHS.

Nevada Humanities has announced the book selections for its statewide 2021 Nevada Reads program. Nevada Reads will feature two memoirs — Miracle Country: A Memoir by Kendra Atleework, and World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

Jacqueline Milagros Acosta-Bruno was born Nov. 17, 2002 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev., to Claudia Bruno and Hector Acosta. She has four younger brothers and sisters, all attending Carson City Schools, as well as a sibling just 18-months-old.

Carson City is now accepting letters of intent to apply for its Community Support Services Grant. Non-profit organizations and government agencies are qualified to fill out the Letter of Intent. As CHS teachers and students return to school, from, hopefully, a relaxing winter break, would it not be great to know one of their teachers recently published a short story? CHS Language Arts Department teacher Brigette Pugh is excited to share her latest published piece of writing.

CHS Senior Abby Golik, after being told Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, were temporarily cancelled, decided she wanted to do a Senior Project anyway.

Brad Bonkowski has served on the Carson City Board of Supervisors for eight years, and has now decided to step down from the post. He will be replaced by Maurice “Mo” White who won the position in the 2020 general election.

Brad sat down to look back on his time spent in office, and answer five questions relating to his eight years as a supervisor, and what his future plans are.

Dear Friends: On a cold Christmas Eve in 1914, German, French, and British Soldiers hunkered down in the muddy trenches that had become their home during World War I. Between those trenches was a war-torn expanse of ground that was simply referred to as “no-man’s land.”

Carson City-based DeBug Computer faced a Christmas challenge. Every year, the company hosts a Photos with Santa event with proceeds going to a local non-profit. The DeBug team huddled with Santa to discuss how to reach the children safely during the coronavirus pandemic. They decided to ask children, with their parents’ consent and supervision, to email a letter to Santa@debugcomputer.net.

This year has been extremely challenging and with the impact of Covid; many of our families are struggling to ensure they can celebrate Christmas. However, generous community members have come together determined to help these families have a Christmas celebration not even Covid can stop.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. A Thanksgiving Turkey Drop for families in need will be held Friday at Max Casino. The holiday movie premieres of “Feliz NaviDAD” and “Once Upon A Main Street” on Saturday will feature different venues in Carson City. Along with a craft show at the Carson Mall and live music, the state capital will be buzzing with excitement! Read on for more information.

The Carson City Library is hiring three interns to assist with a series of three-day Bionics Camps to be held in 2021. Carson City high school students who are interested in assisting with Bionics Camps are encouraged to apply by Nov. 22.

In the age of Covid, many are dealing with anxiety and panic. What is the difference? According to the Mayo Clinic, a panic attack occurs when a person feels intense fear that triggers the “fight or flight” response.

The Carson High School Retro-Homecoming and Respect Week went without a hitch, and the beauty of it was administrators, teachers, and staff had nothing whatsoever to do with making the decisions as the students chose both the candidates and the winners.

This morning I read a most compelling article in the New York Times by one of my favorite journalists, Helene Cooper. Customarily, as the Times' Pentagon correspondent, Ms. Cooper writes about guns and butter, but knowing she was on a team awarded a Pulitzer for coverage of the Ebola epidemic, her piece of today (Sept. 12, 2020) carried much weight with me.

President Donald Trump’s campaign is narrowing its focus in a lawsuit against Nevada’s expanded use of mail-in ballots for the 2020 general election, now specifically challenging a provision allowing ballots received up to three days after the election to be counted if their postmark is unclear.

Transcontinental air mail began in the United States 1920. This transcontinental reenactment of the 15 segments of the transcontinental route are flown by volunteer pilots from across the country. To mirror the events of 1920, Air Mail 100 Centennial Flights project is flying a near mirror version of the stops with minor variations to accommodate airport impacts.

The Carson City Library is hiring to fill an open Digitorium Internship. Digitorium interns help manage the library's teen space and assist with program planning and implementation. The Digitorium Internship starts Sept. 1 and runs through the 2020/2021 school year.

A 24-year-old California man was arrested Tuesday in connection with graffiti found on a bathroom wall at a home improvement store and for also allegedly urinating inside a shed, a Carson City sheriff's booking report states.

Beginning on March 16, 2020, Lyon County School District students and the students of all Nevada schools were asked to stay home — a measure taken by our government leadership in response to the world health crisis surrounding the COVID-19.

With the uncertainty surrounding how long the stay-at-home distance learning would be in place, LCSD Nutrition Services and LCSD Transportation quickly devised a plan to keep the children of the Lyon County community fed —this included any child under the age of 18, even if they were not a student of LCSD.

A man accused of kidnapping and attempted sexual assault of a minor appeared in court in Carson City Friday for his preliminary hearing.

Carson City Senior Judge John Tatro presided over the hearing of Kahlil Deshaun Williams, who is being accused of kidnapping, attempted sexual assault of a minor under 14, lewdness with a minor under 14, and false imprisonment.

Carson High School is pleased to announce individuals who have excelled in their positions as Educational Support Professionals and have been recognized for their works of merit by their peers and coworkers. The ESP employees from CHS are those individuals who enable teachers to focus on the teaching of their students, and every teacher knows that without them, a school could not hope to function.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Ms. Christina Bourne and Ms. Jennifer Chandler have both been nominated and will have the opportunity to compete for “Nevada State Teacher of the Year.” The two were nominated because both have earned accreditations as National Board Certified Teachers. The winner and finalists of the state recognition will be announced later this summer in August.

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Carson High School’s graduation ceremony plan for the Class of 2020.

Carson High School will hold a drive-through ceremony Saturday, June 6, with varying times throughout the day where graduating seniors and their families will stay in their single vehicle until it's time for the graduate to exit their car, have their name announced on the loudspeaker as they walk across a stage erected on the northwest lawn (near the blue and white concrete ‘CHS’ sign), collect their diploma, have their picture taken, return to their vehicle and then proceed to the exit.

Silver State Industries, the industrial arm of the Nevada Department of Corrections, has launched a manufacturing program to produce medical gowns and masks to help protect Nevadans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gov. Steve Sisolak has signed a directive easing some coronavirus-related restrictions starting Friday, May 1, including allowing golf, drive-in worship services and curbside pickup at marijuana dispensaries and other retailers.
