New York-based playwright, opera librettist, theatre critic, and arts journalist David Cote is the current visiting artist with the Resident Artist Program in historic Silver City, Nev.

While he's here in August and September, he hopes to draft a 70-minute, spoken, dramatic monologue for a male performer about carpentry, family, and faith. You can learn more about his creative process during a free, public talk at the Brick at 108 E Proctor Street in Carson City this Thursday August 22, 2019 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in an event that also includes a talk by Chicago-based sculptor Nicole Beck.

National Aviation Day was celebrated Monday, August 19. President Franklin D Roosevelt established this United States national observation in 1939. The date is the anniversary of Orville Wright’s birthday. Since 1903 when Orville and Wilbur Wright first achieved piloted, controlled, sustained, heavier-than-air flight the world has changes significantly. We are all touched by aviation in one way or another. Everything from people to packages are transported via airplanes.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. Rusty Goe has spent much of his professional life on a deep dive into the history of the U.S. Mint in Carson City. He’s written multiple books on the subject and spent thousands of hours in research, getting to know the people who worked there 150 years ago.

Mike Thomas will present two lectures for the month of July. Friday's lecture will be about Egypt: The slide-show lecture covers Mike's grand tour of this ancient land. Saturday night will be about Space Images: Amazing photographs of celestial objects.

Tomorrow, Thursday July 11, the first of the summer artist series — free to the public — will feature artists Claire Scully and Russ Connell from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

On Thursday July 11 at 6:30 p.m., the Douglas County Historical Society will be continuing its Heritage Lecture Series with a history presentation titled, “A Sentimental Journey Along Highway 395.”

The presentation will be made by local author, historian and Douglas County Historical Society member David Woodruff.
