The latest edition of Capital Crossfire features Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes and educator John Eppolito. The topic of the discussion is "Common Core, a curse or cure for American Education."

What is Common Core (CC) and why should you care?

Its proponents say CC is merely a set of standards for kindergarten through twelfth-grade education developed by disinterested and public-spirited experts at the request of the nation’s governors and state school superintendents.

As Dayton transitions from a rural to a more urban community, traffic concerns need to be resolved, but must be done prudently and in the right time.

This was the underlying message at a meeting at Sutro Elementary School Thursday night where more than 70 citizens, county officials, law enforcement and first responders heard from Nevada Department of Transportation officials.

But for a community that has seen countless accidents in past years this was not quite what most had hoped to hear.

The statistic is staggering: 56 percent of school children, grades 5-12, or about 13 million nationwide say they've been a target of bullies at one time or another.

It's a problem that affects communities, families and schools. Tackling the issue takes a commitment from parents, teachers, law enforcement, elected officials and children themselves. That was the message delivered Saturday at workshop in Carson City presented by the founding members of the national nonprofit group Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc.

Carson City School District will be offering free full-day kindergarten beginning this fall at all elementary schools. Registration begins Aug. 6 from 8:30 to 3 p.m. and continues daily.

The full day, student-centered kindergarten is aligned Common Core state standards and offers activities paced to fit the development needs of young children. Funding for program is provided by the Carson City School District and passage of measures during the 2013 Nevada Legislature.

I can remember when, as a young child, I had small square wooden building blocks with painted letters and numbers on all the sides. They were about an inch and a half square. I could use them to learn to count or learn the ABC’s or make words. I could also stack them up and make buildings or forts. Their use was as unlimited as my imagination.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Legislature reconvened for a brief a special session on Tuesday morning to finish up work on several bills that were not passed in time to meet Monday’s midnight deadline for the end of the 77^th regular session.

Gov. Brian Sandoval ordered the 27^th Special Session during the predawn hours of Tuesday. Legislators worked through the morning to pass five measures, including one that will allow the Board of County Commissioners in Clark County to raise the Sales and Use Tax in order to fund the hiring of additional police officers.

On Friday, the Legislature’s two budget committees approved a public school spending plan that establishes $2.8 billion in general fund support for the next two years.

The plan largely follows Gov. Brian Sandoval’s recommendations budget proposal for K-12 education, which also designates basic state support of about $5,500 per pupil over the next two years — an increase of about $200 over existing funding levels.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has said his administration has two top priorities: education and economic development.

When it comes to education, Sandoval has used both the bully pulpit of his office and his budget to call for school choice, ending social promotion, expanding full-day kindergarten and improving funding for programs targeting English-language learners.

Implementing full-day kindergarten is a priority for Democrats in the Nevada Legislature, but the ambitious proposal comes with an as yet undetermined price tag or funding.

Rakes, shovels, wheel barrels, wood chips and wrenches were united with nearly 170 volunteers Saturday in Carson City, pitching in their time to put up new playground equipment at Bordewich Bray Elementary School.

Through the support of the Let Them be Kids organization that awarded the school equipment, along with faculty, staff, students and parents, the playground equipment is designed with all students, especially those with autism.

Through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, and with the strong support and leadership provided by Let Them Be Kids, Bordewich Bray E.S. in Carson City will build a brand new playground for its Kindergarten area.

A parent walks alongside her child. She grips his hand tightly. She is excited, to be sure, but she will shed some tears today as she leaves her child for his first day of kindergarten. Thirteen years later, she will watch that same child walk across a stage, accept a diploma and end his journey through the K-12 educational system. For many Americans, these two engrained images serve as the cultural bookends of our educational continuum. Crystal Trujillo, 26, will be tried on charges of attempted murder and leaving the scene of an accident for allegedly running over her boyfriend on Sept. 22.
