CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval is encouraging all Nevadans to wear jeans this Wednesday, April 25, 2018, in support of Denim Day. By participating in Denim Day, Nevadans will join an international campaign against sexual assault and sexual violence and demonstrate support for victims of those crimes.

The Resident Artist Program in Silver City Welcomes Frances Melhop

Flag Day, Army’s 241st birthday celebrated at Nevada Veterans Memorial at state capitol

Nevadans marked both Flag Day and the Army's 241st Birthday in a ceremony Tuesday at the Nevada Veterans Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City.

Nearly doubling last year’s attendance, well over 100 people and many active military personnel attended the ceremony, which featured the Presentation of Colors, the National Anthem, the Army Song, and welcome remarks by emcee Guy Clifton.

This August, two 2016 CHS graduates, and a student who finished her sophomore year, will begin another year of high school in a new country, learning a new language, and living with a different family.

Seniors MacKenzie Gilliam and Delaney Fine, and sophomore Alexa Conrad, were chosen for the Rotary exchange program. Gilliam will be going to Italy, Fine to Belgium and Conrad to Leon, France.

Business Spotlight: Fine Italian dining at the Carson Nugget

Angelina’s Italian Bistro, the newest fine dining Italian restaurant in Carson City, is celebrating its grand opening now through Sunday inside the Carson Nugget.

The restaurant officially opened Feb. 2, said Carson Nugget Director of Operations Tim Morrissey, replacing the Carson Nugget Steakhouse.

Morrissey said Angelina's Italian Bistro is a nod to Carson Nugget owner Dean DiLullo’s family.

WNC to host Carson City community walk Saturday to spotlight sexual assault

Western Nevada College student leaders are serious about preventing sexual assault in our society. To bring awareness to the problem, they will lead a free public Sexual Assault Awareness Walk on Saturday, April 30, 10 am.

The 2.3 mile round-trip walk will begin in the parking lot just south of the Bully’s Restaurant at 3530 N. Carson St, at the intersection of U.S. Hwy 395 and West College Parkway in Carson City.

Carson City scavenger hunt among events statewide to mark 50th year of National Preservation Act

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

UNR's Nevada Seismological Lab earthquake forum to feature global and regional experts

International experts will join with local seismologists in a public forum this month to inform the region on the dangers and probabilities of devastating earthquakes, and how to recover economically as a region.

Contrary to the general public perception, the California-Nevada border region is at risk for large, magnitude 7-plus earthquakes striking the greater Reno-Tahoe region. In a magnitude 6 earthquake, according to FEMA estimates, the region could suffer billions of dollars in damage: $1.9 billion in the Reno/Sparks area and $590 million in the Stateline area.

They have come from as far as 5,341 miles away to play for the Western Nevada College baseball team in 2016.
WNC coach D.J. Whittemore's roster includes players from Wilrijk, Belgium; Kingsport, Tenn.; Seattle, Wash.; Fort Collins, Colo.; Park City, Utah; and Glendora, Calif.

Senator Square: Rivalry between Carson and Douglas spreads to school staffs

The staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.

Carson City's Pets of the Homeless annual food drive received record breaking donations on Monday. This national organization is dedicated to helping the homeless population provide for their pets through annual food and supply donations. The food drive generated 700 more pounds than last year's donations.
