Railroad Museum in Carson City on the state budget hit list

Under a proposed state budget plan, four of Nevada's museums operated by the Division of Museums and History would close, including the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, said Peter Barton, acting administrator for the Division of Museums and History.

Other museums on the proposed state budget chopping block are the Nevada Historical Society in Reno, the state's oldest museum which opened in 1905; the Lost City Museum in Overton; and the Nevada Northern Railway Passenger and Freight Depot in East Ely.

Artist Erik Holland honored by Nevada Historical Society

Reno artist Erik Holland, who has created 22 paintings of Austin, Nev., historic buildings, is being honored at the Nevada Historical Society with a show and opening reception on Friday, Aug. 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Changing Gallery at the Nevada Historical Society Building across from the Fleishman Planetarium at the back of UNR Campus in Reno.

Carson City Historical Society Ice Cream Social

Come join the fun on a cool summer evening when the Carson City Historical Society hosts their annual Ice Cream Social. Special ice cream and cookies will be available for $4 per person — and children attending will be able to build their own birdhouse courtesy of Jim DeMagistris of Woodworking Specialties. The evening will be filled with music as David Bugli's "Millennium Bugs" who will play during the event. The Ice Cream Social is on Saturday, Aug. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Tour Carson City 'Through the Garden Gate'

Tour some of Carson City's most beautiful gardens with the Carson City Historical Society on Sunday, June 6, from noon to 5 p.m. Music and surprises along the way. Tour stops are the Bliss Mansion, Foreman-Roberts, Krebs-Peterson, Colcord, and Crisler houses. In addition, there will be an antique show and sale at the Barber-Belnap home.

Carson City railroad history celebrated with arrival of McKeen Motor Car V&T No. 22

CARSON CITY — It was 'all aboard' the historic McKeen Motor Car V&T No. 22 on Sunday for dozens of railroad enthusiasts as the Nevada State Railroad Museum celebrated a milestone 100th anniversary commemorating the iron horse's arrival to the Carson City railroad.

The celebration was at the platform of the historic Wabuska Depot. Numerous local, state and federal officials and noted railroad historians participated in the event, trading stories and history references, and taking turns riding the car.

The Bernhard family, donors of the car, were the honored guests.
