Saturday, August 31

Heading into Labor Day weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next four days, which include guided tours at the Nevada State Museum, movie showings at Mills and Schulz Ranch Park, a school supply car cruise and Bingo fundraiser at the Carson Mall, trash pickup at Lake Tahoe, a Rolling Stones tribute band at Carson Nugget, Virginia City’s Labor Day Parade and more!

Heading into the final week of August and the Labor Day weekend around the corner, Monday, August 26 looks to be another especially hot day across the capital city and western Nevada with highs in the mid-90s. Activities around the capital city include a talk about earthquake preparedness with Carson City's fire chief, art showings, a clay club ceramics class at Western Nevada College, West Coast swing dancing at Carson Lanes and more. Enjoy the day.

Carson High School Principal Gavin Ward stood at the north entrance high-fiving students as they entered high school, some of them for the first time. In fact, counselors, teachers, and other administrators stood at each of the school entrances welcoming students to the best high school in the state, hyperbole aside.

Heading into Monday, August 19, 2019 and that means one thing if you're a teacher, parent or student: It's the first day of class across Carson City School District campuses. Welcome back. Make it a safe, enjoyable experience as this day will create memories that will last a lifetime. Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. If you missed them, there will be a viewing party hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC beginning at midnight Tuesday morning, August 13. Otherwise, it's onward and upward into the day with a Cooperative Extension presentation, Shred Kids mountain bike camp, Red Cross sitter certification class, West Coast swing dancing and more.

AARP National has just released the winners of their Community Challenge Grants and the Brewery Arts Center is on the list!

For the third annual AARP Community Challenge, AARP received more than 1,660 applications from nonprofits and government entities, resulting in a highly competitive selection process.

The movie trailer for "Top Gun: Maverick" where segments of the production were filmed at Lake Tahoe, was released Thursday by Paramount Pictures.

"Top Gun: Maverick" is the sequel to 1986's blockbuster "Top Gun." In true dramatic fashion, the trailer builds up the story of the Tom Cruise character Maverick as the new flight instructor of the Top Gun school.

Heading into Memorial Day, May 27, 2019, we urge all to take time out of your day to honor those who served and died defending our country. Memorial Day is the day we celebrate those men and women who passed while serving in the United States Armed Forces. There are events Monday in Carson City at the Stewart Indian School Cemetery and at Lone Mountain Cemetery and in Fernley at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

As we head into a jam-packed Memorial Day weekend, activities and events around Carson City on Friday will help set the mood for what promises to be a tremendous few days ahead. CARSON CITY — Science students from Mr. Michael Reynolds class at Carson High School (CHS) will have an elevating opportunity to go Up Up and Away…well, err…tethered, Tuesday morning, April 23. Karalyn Mumm, owner and commercial pilot of the balloon “Citrus in the Sky,” will provide tethered hot air balloon rides on the front lawn at the high school.

Dear Friends, happy spring time! While our newest season officially arrived March 20th, it seems just now I am starting to believe winter is finally losing its grip and giving way to the kinder, gentler, days of spring. With each day, I see a little more of the renewal of life we have come to associate with this time of year.

Well the weekend sure went fast as we say goodbye to March. Now we're heading into Monday, April 1, 2019 where pranks, larks and tom foolery are orders of the day. No fooling when it comes to the weather though. We may see a slight chance of showers in the afternoon and evening with more of a chance of rain on Tuesday. Stay tuned.

And that may happen today with gusty winds to usher in another storm, expected to bring up to 2 feet of snow around Lake Tahoe. The question remains, will the storm produce a little or a lot of rain down here in the valley? Stay tuned.

The High Sierra Fly Casters and the Carson Fly Fishing Club are joining forces to sponsor a Ladies Day fly fishing clinic starting at 8 AM on April 27 at Fuji Park on Old Clear Creek Road (across from Costco) to introduce newcomers to fly fishing. This one-day event is open to the public, but advance registration is necessary.
