CARSON CITY — In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000.

Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge.

JoAnne Skelly: Bee City USA

Carson City is a Bee City USA as of October 2018. When I first saw the sign, I didn’t know what it meant.

It is fitting that the state capital should be the first and only (so far) Bee City in Nevada. The city is now the 76th Bee City in the USA.

JoAnne Skelly column: Climate Change Impacts on Nevada

I have been curious how climate change will affect Nevada in years to come. I found an informative site here that is put out by climatecentral.org.

Nevada Lore Series: Abe Curry and the Founding of Carson City

People, even Nevadans themselves, often ask why Carson City is our beloved capital. It does seem odd, when you look at the “City,” half rural, half town. Reno has more than double our population, and Las Vegas even more. During the Comstock Boom, Virginia City was arguably the largest, most profitable city in the state.

JoAnne Skelly: In praise of the mighty Jeffrey

Big trees inspire me. In part, it’s their age, but it’s also their size. I was in Agate Bay at Lake Tahoe recently staying with a friend. Outside the back door is one of the biggest Jeffrey pines I have seen. It’s massive and regal.

Here is a look at some of the more profound anniversaries we will observe this year:

RENO — Winter snows are accumulating in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, creating the snowpacks that serve as a primary source of water for the western U.S. However, due to rising average temperatures, snowpacks in the Great Basin appear to be transitioning from seasonal, with a predictable amount and melt rate, to “ephemeral,” or short-lived, which are less predictable and only last up to 60 days.
