Carson City area weather: Wind, valley rain and feet of snow at Tahoe to round out February
February storms that saturated the Carson City and Lake Tahoe regions with rain and snow won't be forgotten anytime soon, with more unsettled weather ahead this week as the month comes to a close, according to the National Weather Service.
A High Wind Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Monday morning through 10 p.m. Monday night for much of the region including Reno, Carson City, Virginia City and Carson Valley.
Winds will increase Monday with the strongest winds likely from mid afternoon to early evening, south to southwest 25 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Wind prone areas may see wind gusts as high as 75 mph.
Dangerous travel is likely for high profile vehicles, especially along Highway 395, with strong turbulence and rotors
for air travel. Damage to trees and power lines is also possible along with minor structural damage, according to the weather service, which advises folks to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away.
Meanwhile, chances for rain showers are expected daily Monday through at least Thursday for the Carson City and valley region, with daytime highs in the mid to upper 40s Monday and Tuesday, low 50s Wednesday and near 50 on Thursday.
Rain chances range from 30 percent Monday to 50 percent Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Lake Tahoe area from 10 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Thursday morning.
Heavy snow is expected. The 3-day storm total snow accumulation ranges from 2 to 4 feet, except 4 to 8 feet above 7,000. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph with gusts over 140 mph for the Sierra ridges. Periods of white-out conditions are likely.
Travel could be very difficult to impossible, according to the weather service. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage and periods of white-out conditions.
The weather service advises motorists to avoid travel if possible during the winter storms, noting they could be stuck in vehicles for several hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.
