The Wildcats are holding their annual Intrasquad Player World Series Wednesday through Saturday at John L. Harvey Field on WNC’s Carson City campus. Game times are 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 12:30 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday. The public is invited to attend at no charge.
Carson Girls Overtake Manogue On The Pitch

The Carson Senators girl's soccer team met the Manogue Miners on the pitch Tuesday at Carson High School. The Senators needed the win badly after losing a league match against Galena last Saturday.
The soccer matchup was physical throughout and in just the fourth minute you could see it starting to unfold when Manogue got booked with a yellow.

The women of Carson High School and North Valleys High School met on the pitch earlier Saturday in Carson City. The girls came out strong right out the gate and set up shop in the North Valleys third of the pitch and had what looked to be a goal in the 9th minute, but got taken away by an off sides call.
Then in the 14th minute, the North Valleys keeper made a jaw dropping save to keep the score at 0-0. It wasn't until the 37th minute when Myra Olivares would blast one to the back of the net to finally give Carson the first goal.

Carson played their sixth match of the season earlier today starting at 3 o' clock at Carson. With the win as a team Carson advances to 5-1 on the season, dropping their only loss to the Grizzlies of Galena. Many of the seniors on the Carson squad stepped up to triumph over Reed for the win today, but one team in particular has been nothing but excellent the entire year.

What many people don’t know is that they may be living or recreating in bear habitat. As drought conditions persist, bears continue to move into more urban environments.

Dead-tree firewood cutting begins Monday, live-tree July 21
Submitted by editor on Thu, 06/12/2014 - 12:11pmThe Carson Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, will open dead-tree firewood cutting areas beginning Monday, June 16, 2014. Dead-tree cutting areas include Hope Valley, Thornburg Canyon, and Leviathan.
Live-tree cutting areas will open on July 21, 2014; live-tree cutting areas include Beagle in the Dog Valley area, Scotts Lake, south of Woodfords, Calif., and Jones Creek off Mt. Rose Highway.
In the live-tree cutting areas, only designated trees may be cut and slash must be piled. Designated trees are described on the live-tree cutting area maps.
Freeway traffic stalled after accident north of Galena Bridge
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Thu, 05/15/2014 - 9:48amReno-bound traffic on the I-580 freeway was backed up Thursday morning for at least a mile after a two-vehicle accident in which a person was trapped in one of the vehicles.
Traffic in the northbound lane north of Galena Bridge was reduced to one-lane as emergency crews worked the help free the person. The accident was reported to the Nevada Highway Patrol at 8:40 a.m. Motorists can expect delays.

NHP responds to 22 weather-related crashes Thursday, one in Carson City and 5 in Douglas County

The Nevada Highway patrol reports 22 accidents early Thursday morning due to snow and icy conditions on the roadways. Of those crashes, one was in Carson City near the I-580 freeway onramp and Highway 50 East and another near Spooner Summit on State Route 28. Five crashes were reported in Douglas County.
Tree permits at Lake Tahoe sell out; permits available at nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 12/04/2013 - 6:37pmThere was a run on Christmas trees in the Lake Tahoe Basin over Thanksgiving weekend. The bad news is that all 2,500 permits were snagged and there won't be anymore issued between now and Christmas.
The good news is nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which has 5,000 permits this season, continues to sell them at a rapid clip, Forest Service officials said.
Forest Service Christmas tree permits on sale beginning Nov. 22

Permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis for $10 each in designated cutting areas for white fir, incense cedar, Jeffrey, and lodgepole pine trees, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Smoke in Carson City area from Lake Tahoe prescribed fires

Fire and fuel crews with the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the Forest Service began the controlled burns today. Winds in front of a storm system are pushing smoke into the area, confirmed Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

Days are still warm, with temperatures averaging in the 60s, but nights are dropping to approximately 35 degrees. It’s the time of year that the region’s upper elevations may even see a dusting of snow.
“We’ve been reviewing all the long-range forecasts,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “And if Mother Nature keeps up her end, we should have above-average snowfall this winter.”

When finished, it will better connect Washoe Valley to South Reno, lighten the traffic through Pleasant Valley, and lessen the bottleneck that’s starting to form at the Mount Rose Intersection. Crowds flocked to the new I-580 freeway connecting Carson City and Reno this morning to bike, walk or run on the northbound lanes sans cars.
It was a big party on the Galena Creek Bridge, with hundreds stopping to look over the edge and take pictures.
The southbound lanes were opened to cars as well to experience this new roadway before it opens full traffic next month.

One dead, 20+ structures lost, 3,700 acres burned in Washoe Drive Fire
Submitted by admin on Thu, 01/19/2012 - 11:09pm10:00 p.m. update: Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said tonight the Washoe Drive Fire has consumed and estimated 3,700 acres, burned at least 20 structures and has resulted in one fatality.
Hernandez would not go into details of how the person died. He said the 250+ firefighters on the scene have stopped the forward progress of the fire. He said the fire started in the East Lake area, and then followed the Highway 395 corridor north, where it was stopped just south of Galena High School.

Washoe Drive Fire consumes 3,000 acres, undetermined number of homes, 4,000 evacuated

UPDATE 510PM: Fire burns more than 3,000 acres with zero containment; 4,000 evacuated; no count on home and structure losses.
At 4:40 pm this afternoon, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, under his constitutional and statutory authority, made a state declaration of emergency which qualifies local governments for federal assistance associated with this event. The National Guard is on standby at the request of Sandoval and Washoe County. California has also provided fire assistance as part of a Governor to Governor agreement with Jerry Brown. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been and are being affected by this fire,” Sandoval said. “Declaring a state of emergency ensures that every resource from the local, state and federal level is available to assist. The Nevada Division of Forestry and the Department of Public Safety have also engaged with local responders.” Additionally, Nevada has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG). As a result, Nevada is eligible for up to 75 percent funding assistance for eligible costs. The request was made by the Nevada Division of Forestry on behalf of Washoe County at the onset of the fire.
