Sunday, Sept. 3: Things to do around Carson City and Beyond

The great thing about Labor Day weekend is that it just keeps going. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off offers up family fun, live music, and plenty of bar-be-qued delights all the way through Monday. For those with younger kids, consider a day at Mills Park. This is the last weekend for summertime train rides through the cottonwoods. Join Muscle Powered at Silver Saddle Ranch by the Carson River for a bike or hike this morning. Bring water and a camera, you never know what wildlife will make an appearance.

Grocery Outlet donated $2,796 to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center's emergency food bank. Dave and Lynne Cox have been ongoing supporters of the center and provided Ron Wood's emergency food bank with $1433 in cash donations and $1363 in food donations.

Carson City based Pets of the Homeless leads 8th national Give a Dog a Bone Pet Food Drive

The National Feeding Pets of the Homeless Give a Dog a Bone week returns for its eighth year, August 6-12, 2017. The Carson City based nonprofit organization Pets of the Homeless, focused exclusively on feeding and providing veterinary care to pets of the homeless, leads the charge across the country to collect pet food from the public.

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive This Saturday

Food Drive for Dayton Food Pantry Gets 2017 Off to a Good Start

A “Stuff a Police Car with Food Donations” event was held at Smith’s Grocery in Dayton on Jan. 7 for the Dayton Food Pantry.

Alie Trier, Dayton Food Pantry manager, said “I was amazed by all the cases of tuna and soup and other food donated — more than $4,500 worth of food, plus $612 in cash, was donated. We’re grateful for the hard work of Pantry volunteers and the Lyon Sheriff’s Department and the VIPs (Volunteers in Policing), and for the generosity of Smith’s Grocery Store, and residents of the Dayton area. Together, they made this event very successful.”

This time it’s to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” One way to observe the MLK Day of Service is to participate in the Clothing and Food Drive for homeless veterans. Drop-off locations are at FISH on East Long Street and the RSVP office on Northgate. The Healthy Community Coalition’s monthly cooking class and demo features Mediterranean food and is open to all comers. You’ll find the ice rink open at 10 a.m.

Senator Square: Carson High counselors say now is the time to prepare for college

Though there are still six months of school remaining, Carson High School’s counselors say that now is the time for seniors to kick it into gear to go to college. Applications for college are due now and in the next few weeks, and scholarship opportunities begin flooding in during January.
