Today we say farewell to February. I’m chomping at the bit for spring and Mardi Gras means it’s just around the corner. The Sierra Nevada Forums return to the Brewery Arts Center with a presentation on civility in a time of political differences. The Carson City Photography Club is welcoming new members: every month you’ll find a different assignment. Those in the nursing field will want to attend the RN Job Fair at Carson Tahoe Hospital for new opportunities.

Sunday night's snow flurries give way to what should be a sunshiny week. The annual Fathers-Daughters Dance at Carson High School isn’t until March 31, but tickets go on sale today. Don’t wait until the last moment to guarantee your spot at this memorable event. Jitterbug the night away with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; you’ll find an intermediate swing lesson and open dance at El Charro Avita. The Fox Brewpub comes to the Monday blues rescue with karaoke hosted by J and M Productions.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for clear skies, but there are rumors of snow flurries. Luckily there are indoor and outdoor activities, no matter what blows our way. At the top of the list for today is Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz at the Brewery Arts Center. Their annual fundraiser is not to be missed.

Bundle up, Carson City. We aren’t due for any more wet stuff today, but the air will have a bitter chill to it. The monthly lecture at the Nevada State Museum will explore what it took to make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Nevada. Sing your heart out with J and M Productions at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar. Another day off for the schoolkids and state workers and, you guessed it, it’s going to be rainy. If you need to get out for a little fun tonight, head to the Carson Cigar Company for their weekly Game Night. Dancing the night away with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club is always a good Monday option.

Fingers crossed, we’ve got a few days without the wet stuff. This winter seems like the song that never ends. We received late word that Saturday's monthly Trash Mob has been canceled. The good news is there's a day-long music fest at the Carson Colony Gym on South Curry is fundraising for the DAPL Water Protectors. Music, art, cinema, comedy and more are on tap for this weekend. Take a look for all of your options.

SATURDAY:

Windy, rainy days are excellent for watching movies. Luckily, the International Film Weekend kicks off today with Chinese film, ‘Wolf Totem,’ in the Community Center Theater. Show up at 3 p.m. if you want to be wowed by some independent films from students at the UNR Reynolds School of Journalism.

Lots of love to you, Carson City, and happy Valentine’s Day. Show some love to Food for Thought today by getting a yummy drink at Dutch Brothers Coffee. The Legislature celebrates the Nevada Tribes with a tour of Stewart Indian School and a lunch-time presentation. Dance to the music of Deep Groove at Sierra Place Senior Living. Let Ev Musselman romance you at Valentine’s Day ‘Cigar Bar Style’ as he channels his inner lounge singer, ‘Cheese the Knife.’ Valentine’s Day with the Mile High Jazz Band means a Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts at Comma Coffee.

It may be a Monday, but there’s some sunshine, no rain, and Valentine’s is in the air. Treat your honey to a night on the town and an amazing performance by the Reno Philharmonic. For one night only, you’ll find the orchestra and special guest pianist, Conrad Tao, in the Bob Boldrick Theater. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint welcomes the River Arkansaw, a bluesy-Americana band from Colorado. Pick your favorite love song to sing at the Fox Brewpub’s karaoke night.

If everything goes as planned, the sun will finally make an appearance. That’s good news for those running in the Carson High Safe and Sober 5K or in Ascent Runs’ Love Can Be Cold 5/10K at Prison Hill. If you’d rather avoid the mud, check out the Champagne and Jewelry Show inside the bigger better Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery. I just keep telling myself that the spring flowers will be amazing this year, but honestly, I’m growing weary of all this rain. Several of our hiking and bike trails have been affected, the sports fields are a muddy mess, and we are still in danger of more flooding.

It’s going to be a great Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Recreation sponsors their weekly ‘Easy Walk’ along Kings Canyon Trail. Although, if the rain continues to fall, the walk will take place at our new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. Capital City Art Initiative celebrates the artists of Western Nevada College this evening, and then welcomes Phyllis Shafer for an illustrated discussion of her work. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club shows off a young Elizabeth Taylor tonight in the 1954 romantic drama ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris.’

TUESDAY:

A hearty welcome to the members of the 2017 Legislature and their staff. You have a busy 120 days ahead of you, but don’t forget to enjoy what Carson City has to offer you while you’re here. I hope you remembered to bring an umbrella; this week will be rainy.

Area you ready for some football? North, south, east, west, or downtown: there’s a good time to be found: drink specials and football squares everywhere. If you couldn’t care less about the Patriot-Falcons match-up, then consider BINGO for CASI or bowling and some Valentine cookie decorating. After all the wind and snow, I’m absolutely in the mood for an early spring. Let’s just hope that the groundhog can’t find his shadow today. A rainy day is in store for us today, and possibly tomorrow, but don’t let that ruin the fun. Jeffery Pace welcomes you to the Grand Opening of Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery’s new location. Two screenings of ‘Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age’ this evening will be in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Community Center: it’s free and open to all. Sing your heart out downtown. You’ll find karaoke at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar and the Westside Pour House.

It’s not exactly warm outside, but compared to some of the bitter cold we’ve had this month, it’s not that bad. Take advantage of the dry weather by joining in on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk in John Mankins Park in Silver Oak. It’s a Jazz Extravaganza at the Community Center tonight. Mile High Jazz Band has teamed up with the Carson High and Carson Middle School jazz bands for their annual concert. The monthly fundraiser at Firehouse Subs makes raising money for Relay for Life as easy as ordering dinner.

TUESDAY:

The new year keeps rolling along, and tonight we’ll hear from Mayor Bob Crowell what we can expect in the upcoming months. The State of the City address, "Carson City - A Community Working Together," will be presented in the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater and is open to all. One thing we can expect is an influx of legislative staff, lobbyists, and lawmakers flooding Carson City. The next Legislative session begins in one week, so expect a little more traffic on the roads and our new downtown crosswalks to get a lot more use.

MONDAY:

Music is good for the soul and the Capital City Community Band is just what the doctor ordered. Grab the kids and head to the First Presbyterian Church for a free concert. Get in a bike ride before the wet weather returns: Muscle Powered leaves from Fremont Elementary School at 9 a.m. and also sponsors weekly hikes throughout town. If you’re interested in joining them, their potluck membership meeting this afternoon at the Brewery Arts Center is the perfect time to fill out a membership card.

SUNDAY:

It’s never too late to get a jump on your New Year’s resolutions and the Health, Wellness, and Safety Fair at the Carson Mall will help you do just that. It’s hard not to notice the beauty around Carson City: the mountains, the historic buildings and our Capitol, the people. We have several talented artists and photographers that capture our valley in the best light. Carson City is running a photography contest for snowy pictures of our valley, go HERE for more information.

It’s a winter wonderland in our neck of the woods, and probably a little messy to drive in. Thankfully, the Carson City and Douglas County School Districts have given you an extra two hours to get the kids to school. It’s not really expected to get above freezing, so be extra careful on what will likely be icy roads. This is the last scheduled week of the Arlington Square Ice Rink, so, if the weather allows, try to get in one last trip. Be safe out there, Carson City, spring is just around the corner.

MONDAY:

As this storm system moves in, it makes it difficult for list-makers, such as myself. I cannot predict which of these events will be affected or cancelled because of the snow. The show must go on for the kids of Youth Theater Carson City. ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ is in its final weekend of performances.

The wintery weather continues, but this next cluster of storms aren’t expected to be as bad as what we’ve already been through. Enjoy some quality time with your little one at the Carson Library: story times are at 10:30 a.m. and at 11:30 a.m.

Enjoy the sunshine while we’ve got it. More rain and snow is just around the corner, so if you think you’ll need sandbags, grab them now. The Carson Animal Shelter Initiative (CASI) meets monthly and is always looking for more people to get involved: join them at the new Animal Shelter. Award-winning Canyon White returns to Living the Good Life for an acoustic set. Chili’s restaurant is hosting a fundraiser for Eagle Valley Middle School: helping out is as simple as buying dinner.

Several people are enjoying yet another three-day weekend. This time it’s to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?” One way to observe the MLK Day of Service is to participate in the Clothing and Food Drive for homeless veterans. Drop-off locations are at FISH on East Long Street and the RSVP office on Northgate. The Healthy Community Coalition’s monthly cooking class and demo features Mediterranean food and is open to all comers. You’ll find the ice rink open at 10 a.m.
