I hope you’re hungry, Carson City. Hungry and adventurous. The annual Chili Cook-off and Craft Fair hits Glen Eagles this weekend, and there will be plenty to sample. If you need something cold to drink, head to 7-ELEVEN for a free small slushee from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. in celebration of Seven Eleven Day. The Farmers Market is always a good bet on Saturday mornings for sampling all the yummy stuff that grows nearby.

Museum offers archeology program to children, families Saturday

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City’s Family Fun Saturday program for July is “Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter,” for ages 10 through adult from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 11. No reservations needed.

The event is designed to allow visitors to gain appreciation for American Indian cultures of the Great Basin, with an emphasis on archaeological methods for learning about the ways people used shelters in the past.

Southgate Block Party in Gardnerville on Sunday to benefit local girl

There's a free block party in Gardnerville on Sunday, June 28, to benefit a local girl, Sierra, who suffers from a brain tumor. Hosted by Northern Nevada Hotspot, the Southgate Block Party will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1475 Southgate Drive. Lots of family fun including face painting, balloon twisting, water candles, raffles, shopping free popcorn, food and refreshments. Check out the ad above.

The solstice couldn’t come at a better time: we need some long days to get through all the fun stuff Carson City has crammed into one weekend. The annual Powwow at the Stewart Indian School runs Friday through Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to see the dancing, peruse the crafts, and eat an Indian Taco. Don’t miss the Fly-in and Open House at the Carson City Airport: fun for the whole family. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of Carson City’s favorite events: the Taste of Downtown. Music, food, and more from Carson Mall to Williams Street. Have a great time, and be safe.

Carson City 2015 Senior Follies presents "Flashbacks!"

Have you picked your pony yet? The Kentucky Derby is today, but that is far from the only thing running today. Chili on the Comstock is hosting their inaugural Fun with the Runs 5K Saturday at 10 a.m. The 1926 Edwards Motor Car is running, too, and ready for rides at the Nevada Railroad Museum. The wine walk is always a good time, and with Mother’s Day next weekend, it can’t hurt to peruse the shops before you run out of time to pick the perfect gift.

    It’s a good weekend to be a kid: the Kerak Shrine Circus is in town! Well, it’s in Reno, but that isn’t too far of a drive for elephants, clowns, and cotton candy. Also in Reno, but intended for a slightly older audience, is the Lady Luck Tattoo and Art Expo, coincidentally held at Circus Circus.

    For the outdoorsy-types you can join in the March to End Senior Hunger 5K in Dayton; the 5K Glow Run benefitting the Western Nevada College Softball Team; or join a ranger at Washoe Lake State Park for a guided hike.

    Family Fun Saturday at the Nevada State Museum on Dec. 13 features a special holiday program, Pines are Fine. All ages welcome to the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    Make a pine needle angel to decorate your holiday tree and craft a holiday wreath out of cones; choose easy crafts for younger audiences. Learn how to tell a pine from a fir or spruce by looking at their cones and needles. Discover one of our state trees, the Pinyon Pine, a plant collected during John C. Frémont’s 2nd expedition.

    Local artists, young and old are donating handmade bowls for a fund raising event that will be held during the Capital Tree Lighting ceremony on December 5th, 2013.

    Restaurants are providing the soup and bread that will fill our Empty Bowls. For a minimum donation of $12, you may select one of the bowls and enjoy a warm winter meal to launch the holiday season. The artisan bowl is yours to keep as a reminder that there are empty bowls in our community. There will also be an art auction at the event!

    RSVP Nevada Day celebration and carnival to celebrate Silver State's 150th birthday

    For the 29th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. will sponsor the Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park on Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, 2014, RSVP executive director Susan Haas announced Friday.

    Earlier this year RSVP went all out over July 4 with a spectacular fireworks display, synchronized to music, to mark Nevada’s Sesquicentennial. For Nevada Day weekend, visitors can expect plenty of games, thrilling carnival rides and entertainment venues.

    “We will have a lot more family fun and entertainment than ever before this year,” said Haas.

    Steam locomotive runs Labor Day weekend at State Railroad Museum

    Family time is around the bend in Carson City as Labor Day weekend arrives. The 1905 Steam Locomotive No. 25 highlights the Labor Day weekend celebration at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. The historic Virginia and Truckee train will carry passengers on 30-minute trips departing every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday through Monday, Aug. 30 through Sept. 1.

    The museum’s Jacobsen Interpretive Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Nevada 150 Sesquicentennial events lined up through September

    The deadline to submit applications for Official and Signature Nevada 150 events will be 5:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead.     Nevada celebrates Sesquicentennial with August event lineup

    Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 15 through Aug. 31.
