CARSON CITY — The Western Nevada College President Search Committee voted today to recommend Dr. Vincent R. Solis as the next president of the College. Dr. Solis is currently the Senior Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Laredo Community College in Laredo, Texas.

UPDATE: 11:25AM: The Nevada State Public Charter School Authority (SPCSA) has voted unanimously to close Argent Preparatory Academy of Carson City at the end of its 2017-18 school year, a motion carried by the SPCSA Board said.
Students, parents, faculty and staff of Argent Preparatory Academy left the hearing room, some in tears.
Students could be heard saying, "I don't know what I'm going to do now."
Recommendation of the SPCSA is to close Argent Preparatory Academy at the end of its 2018 summer session this August.

A military career showed Daniel Lear that he wanted to spend his life helping others. Adult life has taken Lear on a few twists and turns, but it hasn’t changed his primary goal to assist people. That desire is closer to becoming a reality as a second-year nursing student at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

On Wednesday, March 14, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a talk by Carson City’s Arts & Culture Director Mark Salinas.

His illustrated talk, "Choices, Chances, and Changes," is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union restaurant, 302 W. Proctor St in Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Salinas preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

Two pressing issues in Northern Nevada are problems encountered by cities throughout the country: affordable housing and homelessness. Western Nevada College student Masih Madani believes he has a viable solution to both of them and is devoted to seeing these issues addressed.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Writing from Mars," by artist Rick Parsons at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Friday, February 2, 5-7pm. The exhibit will be in the gallery from February 2 – May 23, 2018.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "ART from WNC," at the Community Development Building (the Brick) 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Eleven student artists from Western Nevada College, Carson City, have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through April 12, 2018; the building is open Monday - Friday, 8am – noon, 1-4pm.

"ART from WNC" includes a wide variety of art including graphic design, drawing, photography, and watercolor painting that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

It is not unusual for Lupe Ramirez, Western Nevada College’s Latino outreach coordinator, to see her students out and about on the weekends at quinceañeras and other events.

Carson Valley Middle School eighth-grader Jacob Pipho, from Carson City, placed first in the National Radon Poster Contest, after taking home first place in the Nevada Radon Poster Contest. He competed against student winners from several other states and will receive $1,000 for his poster, “The Element of Surprise.”

Thanks to a $1.45 million project funded by the William N. Pennington Foundation, Western Nevada College celebrated the opening of new biochemistry and human cadaver laboratories on Thursday.

This Monday might feel a little manic. The Carson and Lyon County kids are back at school (Douglas County starts up again tomorrow.) Rain is expected all day long, so indoor activities are your best bet. Inquiring minds will enjoy the ‘NASA at your Library’ program, just make sure to register online if your kid would like to participate. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club is back on the Eleventh Frame Lounge dance floor after a few weeks of holiday hiatus.

We have survived the first week of 2018, and that deserves some celebration. Put a smile on your face at the Brewery Arts Center: their monthly improv night will have you in stitches. Ev Musselman of the Trippin King Snakes takes the stage at Living the Good Life and will have you on the dance floor. Meet artist Carrie White at the Carson City Art Gallery. The first weekend of the year approaches, and that means our monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. It’s never deterred, come rain, shine, or tornado, so make plans with your friends now. Get a jump on any healthy resolutions by joining Muscle Powered on today’s hike along Prison Hill; just be prepared for the trek and great photo opportunities. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint has snared touring band, The River Arkansas, to play some Americana roots on their stage; a perfect dinner and show.

I don’t want to jinx anything, but there are rumors of wet stuff on the way. Granted, the valley will probably just see some rain, but I love seeing our mountains snow-capped. The Epic Rides’ Carson City Off-Road race isn’t until June, but locals can sign up tonight at a nice discount. Teens can find a little peace and quiet with the new Meditation Group that meets at A to Zen. Learning to calm your mind can be an invaluable tool during the school year.
