Reimagining learning, the Carson City Library is bringing robotics technology and engineering to Carson City middle school students starting in February.

Nevada Humanities has announced the book selections for its statewide 2021 Nevada Reads program. Nevada Reads will feature two memoirs — Miracle Country: A Memoir by Kendra Atleework, and World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments by Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

Nevada Humanities has been awarded $50,000 by The Federation of State Humanities Councils and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of a new national initiative, Why It Matters: Civic and Electoral Participation, which will explore civic participation as it relates to electoral engagement in a multivocal democracy.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

In addition to being available by phone and online, the Carson City Library and staff remain committed to delivering its services to the local community through a variety of avenues. While currently closed to the public, the library is completing upgrades and installations to enable vulnerable populations to continue to safely access library collections.

Reimagining learning, the Carson City Library is bringing robotics technology and engineering to Carson City middle school students in 2021. Utilizing analog and digital learning, students will build components of a bionic fish, elephant, and chameleon over the 3-day Bionics Camps designed to encourage STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related career exploration and development.

The results are in. Students laughed at them because they had to dress differently, today, but they laughed at the students, too, because they were all dressed the same.

As part of National Arts and Humanities Month in October, Nevada Humanities and the Gender, Race and Identity Department and the English Department at the University of Nevada, Reno, are pleased to present Writing from the Margins: Poetry and Puerto Rico.

As part of the ongoing Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Resiliency: A Blooming Diaspora, opens online on October 1, 2020 at nevadahumanities.org and will be on display as a virtual exhibition indefinitely. A Resiliency: A Blooming Diaspora curator’s talk will take place live on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at 7 pm on the Nevada Humanities Facebook page at: facebook.com/nevadahumanities. It may be a bit quiet around the high school lately, but this will not stop the CHS Student Council from making their senior year one to remember. Leadership Adviser Ann Britt said, “I am pleased to announce the Corona Virus cannot take the fun out of everything, so we are hosting a Spirit Week, Sept. 25 through Oct. 2, at CHS.”

Nevada Humanities presents A Virtual Salon: Nevada’s Public Monuments — the next installment of its bimonthly Salon series — online at facebook.com/nevadahumanities on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at 12 pm PT. This virtual conversation will feature a conversation with historians and activists on the front lines of change about monuments, markers, and the physical presence of history in Nevada.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. Western Nevada College will host a memorial exhibit and informational presentation on the 9-11 attacks on Friday. Partnership Carson City will team up for a statewide suicide prevention virtual walk this Saturday. Along with live music and a 5K run/walk at Bob McFadden Plaza, there is plenty of excitement buzzing around the state capitol! Read on for more information.

CARSON CITY — It’s been nearly two decades since the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda sinisterly carried out the single deadliest human terrorist attack ever by crashing hijacked passenger airplanes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Nevada’s open roads are beckoning travelers who have been home-bound since mid-March. At a time when 18 states currently won’t accept Nevadans unless they quarantine for two weeks, it’s tempting to hop in the family car and explore Nevada history and nature giving you the opportunity to escape the tedium caused by the pandemic and to temper your wanderlust.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce the opening of the Nevada Humanities Major Project Grants that are part of their FY2021 Nevada Humanities Project Grants to Support Public Humanities Projects. These Major Project Grants have a public humanities project focus and will support larger-scale public humanities projects statewide that range from one month to one year to implement.

The Nevada Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation officially re-launched LifeWorksNV, the statewide work-based learning hub for student career seekers looking for information and opportunities in registered apprenticeship, internships, career and technical education programs, career exploration and more.

CARSON CITY — Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada and Girl Scouts of the USA announced Monday there are 24 new badges designed to help girls practice ambitious leadership in the crucial areas of automotive engineering, STEM career exploration, entrepreneurship, and civics, many of which remain male-dominated.

There’s nothing better than fresh air to restore the mind, body and soul, and in these troublesome days when we must wear masks just about everywhere, it is nice to be able to breathe in fresh air as we exercise our bodies and clear our troubled minds.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce the awards for Nevada Humanities CARES: Emergency Relief Grants for Nevada Humanities and Cultural Organizations. Forty-six cultural and humanities organizations across Nevada received $368,873 in federal CARES Act grants.

Nevada Humanities presents A Virtual Salon: Valley of the Sun — the next installment of its bimonthly Salon series — online at facebook.com/nevadahumanities on Friday, July 17, 2020, 6 to 7 p.m.

This virtual conversation will feature a discussion about Sun Valley, Nevada, the history of this region, the stereotypes associated with trailer park culture, and the creativity that is born out of this place.

As part of the ongoing Nevada Humanities Exhibition Series, a new exhibition, Colors of the West: Youth Art from the 2020 National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, opened online on June 4, 2020 at nevadahumanities.org and will be on display as a virtual gallery indefinitely.

Nevada Humanities presents the next installment of its bimonthly salon discussion series online Friday, May 15 on Facebook. The topic is Indigenous Narratives in the Modern Context and will feature a virtual discussion about journalism, jurisdictional issues and Indigenous narratives.

The Carson City Library will host a community read of My First Summer in the Sierra by John Muir for Capital City Reads, Carson City Library’s annual city-wide book club.

Capital City Reads takes place every April as a celebration of National Library Week, bringing people together through reading and discussion.

This year’s program starts with National Library Week on April 19 and will run through May 16.

CARSON CITY — In today’s new coronavirus, COVID-19, world of home-based work and child education, many are turning to online resources to keep diverse age groups engaged.

One of the most extensive sources of online materials is based right here at the Carson City Library, offering a collection of online resources from audiobooks to adult learning and picture books to magazines.

The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Carson City Schools Foundation, is pleased to announce winners of mini-grants from Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. The competitive process garners dozens of applications from district educators each semester. In addition to the mini-grants, the foundation has also awarded $2,000 to $3,000 grants for a Department, School or Grade-level projects.

Nevada is home to more than 150 plant species that live exclusively in our state, including the Tiehm buckwheat, a rare desert wildflower that is only known to exist in particular geologic conditions in the Silver Peak Range of Esmeralda County.

CARSON CITY — The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

Nevada Humanities has announced the book selections for its statewide 2020 Nevada Reads program. Nevada Reads is a statewide book club that invites Nevadans to read selected works of literature and then come together in their communities to share ideas and perceptions inspired by the books they have read.

Nevada Humanities will hold a series of free informational grant meetings in Henderson, Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko in January 2020. These meetings are open to anyone interested in learning more about applying for project grant funding from Nevada Humanities.

Nevada Humanities offers grants of up to $5,000 to nonprofit organizations and government entities, such as libraries and schools, to fund public and educational programs in the humanities.
