Carson City School District is hosting a Community Sustainability Night Thursday, May 16, 5-7 p.m., at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa. Families and members of the community are invited to come celebrate initiatives and partnerships for sustainable practices.

CARSON CITY — Employment in Nevada increased by 1,700 jobs over the month and is up 47,200 over the year, according to the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s March 2019 economic report.

One month before high school graduation, some students may not have a solid plan for “what’s next.” Western Nevada College has partnered with the Carson City School District Office of Work-Based Learning to provide a career-launching opportunity.

This is the fifth in a series of columns summarizing my Controller’s Annual Report (CAR) for fiscal year 2018 (FY18).

The first two columns showed that since FY06 state spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy, thus imposing an ever-larger real burden on Nevada families and businesses, whose real per-capita incomes are lower now than in FY06. The other two analyses reviewed spending on health and social services and on K-12 education, the two largest budget items by far and the only major areas on which spending has grown faster than Nevada’s economy.

Nevada exceeded all its mandated performance measures for the 2nd quarter of 2018 in efforts to hire and train dislocated adults and youth as part of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, according to a report released Monday by the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

LAS VEGAS/CARSON CITY, Nev. – Gov. Steve Sisolak and the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) board approved performance-based initiatives for seven businesses to relocate in Nevada or expand their operations, which could create 270 new jobs.

The companies’ applications approved for initiatives represent a wide range of businesses across the state including a robotic company in Reno, a technology company in Las Vegas, and an industrial supplier of organic botanicals, spices, chili and teas in Minden.

CARSON CITY — The Silver State added 3,800 jobs the first month of 2019 and 53,300 jobs over the past year, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s January 2019 economic report.

Students and educators at Carson High School will celebrate national Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month in an invitation-only event with a special visit from Nevada State Governor Steve Sisolak, Thursday, Feb. 7 at 8:45 a.m. in Senator Square at Carson High School. Event seating begins at 8:30 a.m. with the Governor’s address at 8:45 a.m.

Good morning Carson City, today is Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019 and it will be a soggy one at that. Rain will continue throughout the morning, changing to snow showers later this afternoon, which has prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for the lower valley areas such as Carson City and Carson Valley. Forecasters urge motorists not to travel into the Sierra today as several feet of heavy snow will impact roadways and travel.

Healthy Communities Coalition’s January breakfast meeting includes a discussion and request for input on the Coalition’s updated Comprehensive Community Prevention Plan.

WNC offers certifications during spring semester that could lead to employment in industries such as manufacturing, information technology, computer-aided drafting, welding, machining, bookkeeping, health care, construction and automotive mechanics.

The December Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties meeting is Thursday, December 13th at 9am at the Silver Springs Community Center. The public meeting includes a festive holiday brunch with dishes made with locally sourced ingredients.

Here are some random tidbits on domestic violence I bet you didn't know:

According to the Nevada Domestic Violence Resource Manual, most victims of domestic violence leave their abusers — often several times. It may take a number of attempts to permanently separate because abusers use violence, financial control, or threats about the children to compel victims to return.

Winners of the 91st National FFA Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event held in Indianapolis were announced at the annual awards banquet, and students Connor Arnold, Alexsandra Knowlton, Maritza Filson, and Hayden Story took home some medals.

In acknowledgement of the Carson City School District’s sustainability achievements, the Northern Nevada Development Authority provided a Special Recognition of Excellence for Sustainability Practices during its monthly ‘The Business Edge’ meeting at the Carson Nugget Casino, Oct. 24.

Housing prices for both homeowners and renters alike in Carson City have been climbing as the housing market increases, but wages aren't following suit. CARSON CITY — In an ongoing effort to address substance use prevention and treatment in the Silver State, Gov. Brian Sandoval has launched a campaign to help Nevadans recovering from addiction and help employers looking to provide a workplace that supports recovery.

CARSON CITY — While Carson City remained relatively unchanged in July regarding the addition of new jobs, statewide figures show an increase of 3.4 percent, which correlates to 46,000 new jobs added since July of last year, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
