The Quad County area (specifically Carson City) is still seeing a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, and we are continuing to see a surge in hospitalizations as well.

As COVID-19 cases soar in Northern Nevada and local and regional hospitals are reaching capacity, Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City is making changes to adapt to the surge of cases.

Like the rest of Northern Nevada, the nation, and the world, Carson Tahoe has spent the last 8-10 months planning. Planning to be prepared in a crisis so we can still take care of our community; planning to persevere; planning to help one another.

Now – we’re in it.

Holly Marie Shrum died in Carson City, NV on Monday October 12, 2020 surrounded by her family. Holly was 44 years old.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies responded Wednesday morning to a vehicle crash involving a bicycle rider in the area of William Street near Mills Park.

A 53-year-old transient man, a 60-year-old Tenasca, Wash. man and a 34-year-old Fernley man were arrested in the 400 block of Fairview Drive Wednesday for possession of a stolen vehicle, organized retail theft, conspiracy to commit fraud, and possession of heroin.

CARSON CITY — Last week, the Emergency Nurses Association announced that Carson Tahoe Health Emergency Department received the esteemed Lantern Award for 2020, which will span until 2023. The ENA recognizes just 25 emergency departments worldwide that exemplify exceptional practice and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division is asking for assistance in identifying three suspects involved with a shooting that had occurred yesterday morning in the area of Stanford Drive.

UPDATE 5:11PM: The assailants are described as three males in their 20s. Two were wearing dark colored clothing and the other was in light colored clothing. All three suspects were described to be in hoodies and wearing face coverings.

UPDATE 2:23PM: After 8 a.m. Thursday morning, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office was notified of a patient at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center Emergency Room with a gunshot to the hand.

At arrival, deputies were informed by the victim that three unknown persons forced their way into his home at the 1500 block of Stanford Drive and shot him. The unknown assailants fled immediately, and the victim transported himself to the hospital, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong in a news release.

Listening to a medical training need that a workforce sector was asking for prompted Western Nevada College to launch a Paramedicine program this year.

During this pandemic, I would love to think I am in fact a builder because I strive to see the best in this, because I have been helping those struggling immensely during these hard times, and because I am doing my best to help the medical professionals I know.

Gov. Steve Sisolak says he expects to know much more next week about whether conditions are right to either end or extend directives that have shut down much of the state, but cautioned that he had no “benchmark date” in place and that any easing of restrictions would likely be gradual.

Life Change Center has helped nearly 700 Carson City and rural residents combat opioid drug addiction during its three years in the capital city, and they’ve been so successful they’re now going to be opening their third location in Reno.

A 30-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday for suspicion of felony battery with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor domestic battery after she allegedly stabbed and slashed her boyfriend with a pair of scissors, a sheriff's deputy report states.

When Joe Tummarello moved into a sober living home in Carson City called Lyfe Recovery, his friends and family thought he was doing well. However, at the end of July, he wound up in the hospital after his health declined rapidly. His family says this was due to severe neglect at the hands of the owner and manager of the facility. By several accounts, he was denied medical treatment until a senior living home provider stepped in and took him to the hospital, where he died a week later.

The question is: did Joe Tummarello die before his time? And if the answer is yes, then is someone responsible for his demise?

CARSON CITY — Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, an affiliate of Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah recently added a nurse triage line to provide symptom management to established patients. The nurse triage line coordinates care between the patient, nurses, and physicians at the Cancer Center.

— A 34-year-old Carson City man identified as David Michael Wright was arrested Thursday evening on a felony third DUI and failure to maintain a lane after multiple people reported a drunk driver traveling on the freeway.

“As a recovering heroin addict myself, I’ve seen what it does,” he said. “It sucks.”

Marcellous Davone Galaviz was convicted of child abuse with a deadly weapon causing substantial bodily harm in Carson City on Thursday following a three day trial. The man claimed that he awoke from a nap to a spirit holding him down and burning him, and later he realized the spirit had also burned his girlfriend’s baby who was under his care.

CARSON CITY — Terry Kerns, substance abuse and law enforcement coordinator with the Nevada Office of the Attorney General, spoke at Carson High School on Thursday morning to more than 300 freshmen about the opioid crisis facing Nevada and the science of addiction. She will offer the same presentation again tomorrow to the remaining 300 freshmen on the same topics.
