Dear Friends, I wanted to send my very best wishes to each of you for a peaceful and safe Spring Break. During the past three weeks, I have marveled at the professional services and selfless acts of kindness you have delivered during one of the most incredible events of my career.

A virtual town hall meeting was held Wednesday evening where local leaders spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic, how it affects Carson City and what city departments, schools and Carson Tahoe Hospital are doing to mitigate the issues.

Food insecurity in the Carson City area has risen sharply since the COVID-19 outbreak in Nevada, resulting in an increased need for food as residents shelter in place during this state of emergency.

The Northern Nevada Dream Center in Carson City has responded by launching a virtual food drive to help meet the growing needs of the community.

CARSON CITY — The Quad-County Emergency Operations Center is partnering with the Salvation Army in Carson City to lend a hand to our communities ensuring we keep our people safe and provided for at this time. The Salvation Army will be accepting donations from the public to serve medical workers and healthcare providers in the Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey Counties who are in need during the COVID-19 response.

Gov. Steve Sisolak said Nevada’s peak of COVID-19 cases could come anywhere from early April to mid-June, saying he was more focused on lessening effects of the pandemic while warning that the state might need to “tighten the faucet” if people don’t heed social-distancing recommendations.

Maurice "Mo" White candidate for Supervisor Ward 2 will be hosting a town hall meeting via Zoom on Friday,  April 10, 2020, at 2:00PM.  All residents of Carson City are invited to discuss your thoughts and concerns regarding Carson City issues.  This meeting has a maximum of 100 participants so please sign in early to get your spot.  Be sure to write down the meeting ID and password.

To our Community: The Greenhouse Project board in conjunction with John Procaccini and Chili Bop Productions, has concluded that in light of the current COVID-19 situation, this year’s Concert Under the Stars is cancelled. This event has taken place the last 11 years in order to grow a thriving agricultural education program on the campus of Carson High School.

An update was given to the Carson City Board of Supervisors regarding emergency operations being provided by Carson City Health and Human Services as well as the quad county Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

During the discussions, Tom Raw, Deputy Emergency Manager for the EOC, said they do not want to publicly disclose the amount of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) the city has. Carson City Health and Human Services Director Nicki Aaker also said they have stopped putting in orders for PPE since orders were not fulfilled in the past.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Though we are not able to raise awareness as we normally would, we will be posting daily on our SARA Facebook page, and we hope you will follow us and share our posts to help us reach as many people as possible.

This crisis has brought out the best in people. Those who attempt to divide us fail. May the goodness we feel towards our sisters and brothers during this difficult time live on long after the coronavirus is eradicated. Like forever.

Gov. Steve Sisolak has announced a moratorium on evictions for both residential and commercial tenants for the duration of the state of emergency, providing relief for renters who, in many cases, are facing the first of the month without a job and are under orders to try to stay at home for their own health.

A year ago today, firefighters were called to the historic Adele's restaurant at 5:19 a.m., during a freezing morning before the sun had even crested the hills. It wasn't a large blaze, most of it had actually been confined to the laundry room in the back of the building. But over the next several months while the popular cafe stood empty, it's doors and windows boarded shut, it was determined that the smoke damage to the building was too great to save.

With the continuing spread of COVID-19 within the U.S., the healthcare providers of the greater Lake Tahoe, El Dorado Region are working closely with each other and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as California and Nevada health authorities, to care for affected individuals. We are also jointly taking steps to limit person-to-person spread within our communities.

United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) announces the launch of the UWNNS Emergency Assistance Fund to support local work in helping meet the increase of basic needs by local families and individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. This morning we wake up to a new reality in Carson City.

Last night at midnight, by order of Gov. Steve Sisolak, all casinos and gaming machines in Nevada shut down, and with them a large chunk of the state's tax revenue.

Today at noon, all non-essential businesses are supposed to close their doors. A majority of the state's workforce is starting today not knowing if they have a job, if they will be paid, or how they will pay their bills.

As Nevada communities comply with requests to limit large gatherings, blood drives have been canceled, and blood donation supplies are dwindling. The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and local health authorities are reminding the community that donating blood is safe and needed at this time.

The Nevada Humane Society's shelters in Carson City and Reno are currently open and fully operational. Our primary goal right now is to reduce the number of animals housed at our shelters in an effort to avoid overcrowding should we need to restrict our services or close altogether.

Heading into the first of the work week, there's some uncertainty due to concerns over the coronavirus. Some activities will go on as scheduled while others may be canceled. We're advising you check with event organizers ahead of time before you plan on attending.

Ford is warning consumers to be alert of scammers looking to take advantage of fear surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) to sell fake products or steal your money or personal information. Fraudsters may use text messages, social media and emails to promote these scams.

The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Carson City Schools Foundation, is pleased to announce winners of mini-grants from Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. The competitive process garners dozens of applications from district educators each semester. In addition to the mini-grants, the foundation has also awarded $2,000 to $3,000 grants for a Department, School or Grade-level projects.

Heading into the start of the work week, temperatures will be comparatively cool compared to last week with daytime highs near 55. The Greenhouse Project will be in the spotlight at a Carson City Democratic luncheon, plus fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and a Carson City Parks and Rec led full moon hike up Dead Truck Canyon. “We did our free clinic at the Community Center, and what a turnout we had; around 100 participants showed up, we had a ton of fun, and we even had high school varsity players help coach the clinic as well” said Carson High School Varsity Basketball coach Jordan Glover.

Carson Tahoe Health (CTH) is unveiling several “Karma Boxes” (wooden/Plexiglas donation cabinets) at its various locations to house toiletries, first-aid items, and nonperishable foods for those in need, all available at any time and at no cost.

This simple, yet powerful concept is best summed up by its slogan, “If it’s empty, fill it. If you need it, it’s yours.”

Featured speakers at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jon Ruiter, Executive Director of The Greenhouse Project, and Cory King, the project's greenhouse manager and garden educator.

According to Shannon Cord with the Carson City Historical Society, the historic Adele’s building will not be saved despite the efforts of many volunteers and contributors.

The historic building suffered a fire in 2019 that, due to smoke damage and insurance issues, was not able to be recovered. It was set for demolition, until a group of activists form the Carson City Historical Society sought to save the building and have it moved to a new location.

The Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford will be joined by several poets and readers on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., for an evening of big-band music and poetry on the theme "Fate & Fortune."
