Thursday, Nov. 16: Things to do in Carson City and beyond

Just one week to go until Thanksgiving. You’ll have from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. to drop off your donation to the Holiday for the Hungry Frozen Turkey Drop at the Carson Nugget; you’ll see the FISH truck on Carson Street and can drop it off without leaving your car. Sherry Rupert, Executive Director of the State of Nevada Indian Commission, is tonight’s speaker at the Nevada State Museum. Learn about the future of the Stewart Indian School, and probably some interesting things about its history. The Polar Express begins its seasonal run this weekend.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. The day may start out cold and wet, but nothing can rain on a three-day weekend. Tomorrow we observe Veterans Day, and say thank you to those who have fought for freedom and liberty. It definitely feels like soup weather, so it’s only appropriate that the Carson Chamber of Commerce is hosting one of their ‘Soup’s On’ Lectures.

Just one last week to go until Hanukkah and Christmas. The Carson Mall is jam-packed full of crafters and unique shops for some of your last-minute gift purchases. Kids will enjoy decorating a cookie at Genoa Candy and Coffee in Carson Lanes; you may as well get there early and bowl a few games first.

75 years ago, the USS Nevada was one of the battleships trapped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. She was the only battleship to get underway during the attack, and according to Naval historian Kermit (Kit) H. Bonner the ship was "the only bright spot in an otherwise dismal and depressing morning" for the United States. Today we remember those lost in that attack, and remember the history behind the battleship that is our battle born namesake. A special exhibit of USS Nevada artifacts, and a lecture on her history are free for all at the State Museum at 1 p.m.

What do you need to get in the holiday spirit? Carson City probably has it covered. Watch ‘A Christmas Wish’ with Jimmy Durante at the monthly meeting of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. Off Stephanie Lane, on Chaparral Court, is a spectacular display known as Nevada Christmas.

Party like it’s 1933 today, it’s the 83rd anniversary of the 21st Amendment. Head to your favorite tavern and toast to the repeal of alcohol prohibition, or head to Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar for their Repeal Day Party. Kids can enjoy hot chocolate and a couple hours of skating after school for the special price of $5, and that includes skate rental. Firkin and Fox is the Monday night place to be with karaoke following tonight’s football game.

Carson City Parks and Recreation Youth Programs Toys for Tots Donation Drive

We have partnered with Division of Children and Family Services here in Carson City to donate toys for the Toys for Tots program. The Ron Wood Family Resource Center here in Carson City has decided to partner with Toys for Tots to donate items as well.

'Costumes for a Cause' Donation Drive and Event

Carson City Cruise - Meet N Greet and Nevada Rural Housing Authority will be hosting "Costumes for a Cause" at Bully's Sports Bar in Carson City. Come by any time between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to drop off your donations, show off your wheels, or just join in the fun.

As always, the Meet will be open to ALL Cars, Trucks and Bikes. We'll be accepting New and Gently Used Halloween Costume Donations for local children in Shelters.

Carson City Toyota Scion extends Boys and Girls Club Community Challenge donation drive

Dick Campagni, a long-time donor to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, has extended the deadline for the company’s dollar to dollar match up to $10,000 in the Campagni Toyota and Scion Community Challenge to April 30. The program was originally expected to end on April 1.

“We feel it’s important to give back to our community, particularly our youth,” Campagni said. “We believe in helping kids, and the Boys & Girls Club is a great organization to partner with to keep our kids safe.”

Nevada's Big Give annual event Thursday

The fifth annual Nevada's Big Give charity drive will be held statewide on Thursday, March 10.

The Big Give is an online donation drive designed to raise as much money as possible in a 24-hour period for various statewide and local charities.

Obituary - Ron "Gonzo" Gonzales

After spending his 64th birthday with his closest family, and fulfilling his wish to live to 64 years of age and force his family to sing, “When I'm 64,” to him, Ron Gonzales, known to most as Gonzo, died at 2:33 a.m. August 14, after suffering from COPD for decades. He spent his last week pleasantly, able to read for the first time in several years after suffering deteriorating eyesight – he'd received a Kindle for his birthday. His last day was spent with his granddaughter and wife, having fun with those he loved.

Carson City Soroptimist launches backpack and school supply campaign

It's Backpack Attack time! Each year Carson City Soroptimist gathers hundreds of new backpacks, filling each with school and hygiene supplies. The filled backpacks are given to local elementary, middle, and high schools to distribute as needed.

Wine Walk Saturday features jewelry, music, and book-signing
