Heading into Thursday, May 23, 2019 we ask: Can you feel it? Yes, the Memorial Day holiday is nearly here and we may even get a weather break or four in between expected showers through the weekend, forecasters say. Activities and events to round out this third Thursday of the month include a meet and greet of Carson City Library candidates at Adams Hub for Innovation, a day hike, a bicycle cruise on the west side of the capital city, a Lunch and Learn Workshop for local nonprofit organizations, a chamber luncheon focusing on mental health, a GOP meeting, art showings, live music and more. Heading into the middle of the work week, Wednesday, May 22, there's no short supply of places to go and things to do around Carson City. We have a bevy of activities lined up Friday including the opening of the Transcontinental Railroad exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, day 1 of the two-day Mother's Day Plant Sale hosted by The Greenhouse Project, RSVP's Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park, a day hike, art showings, live music and more.

Heading into Thursday, May 9, 2019 we're looking at a few showers and partly sunny skies around Carson City. The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. Good day Carson City and welcome to Wednesday, May 8, 2019. We're looking at another day of sunshine and afternoon highs in the low 70s. We have activities throughout the region today, including a history presentation in Dayton, a Holocaust memorial service at the Governor's Mansion, art classes, live jazz and more. We want to send a big birthday "shoutout" to our outdoor editor emeritus Don Quilici, who turns 85 today. Don and his wife, Elaine, remain active, maintain healthy walks and hikes around the region and have plans for yet another Alaska outback trip this summer. Happy Birthday Q!

CARSON CITY — Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This May, the Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources’ State Historic Preservation Office encourages Nevadans to explore and discover the amazing historic and archeological resources that exist throughout the State.

The Carson City Cultural Commission will be holding a meeting on May 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

The Cultural Commission will be making recommendations to the Redevelopment Authority regarding Arts and Culture Special Event funding, according to their meeting agenda.

Heading into Tuesday, May 7, 2019 we are looking at another picture perfect day for a morning or evening stroll with Carson City's own Muscle Powered and a bevy of events, including a chamber digital marketing workshop, Polka Dot Powerhouse Carson City Chapter meeting and open house, family movie and craft night at the Carson City Library, a filmmaking discussion followed by a showing of the classic "12 Angry Men" at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall and more. CARSON CITY — A contingent of high school students from across the Silver State will be at the Nevada Legislature on Tuesday to celebrate GEAR UP — the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program Grant —that is a federally funded, seven-year grant that serves underrepresented students.

In celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness month, the Carson City Historic Resource Commission has organized the 10th Annual Scavenger Hunt. This year’s hunt focuses on the history and culture of the capital city. The Commission crafted the hunt to be an event the family can do together.

Truly a springtime to remember in Carson City as we say goodbye to April, which leaves us with a spontaneous final chill, and hello to Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Temperatures should head back up into the low 60s by afternoon. New University of Nevada head men’s basketball coach Steve Alford has named five members to his coaching staff for the 2019-20 season. Craig Neal will be the associate head coach while Kory Barnett and Bil Duany (DWAY-knee) will serve as assistant coaches for the Wolf Pack. Kory Alford will be the Pack’s director of player development. Brandon Chambers will remain the Pack’s director of operations spot he has filled the past two seasons.
