Hello fellow anglers! As we welcomed in 2021, many anglers ascended on Topaz Lake to bring in the new year. I and fellow angler Tom Blotter were amongst the many.

At 6 a.m. Tom and I were on the lake waiting for the official start time. There was an eerie fog-like mist lingering over the lake. It was a cool 18 degrees, and the winds were calm. Our first line went into the water at 6:33 a.m. and the first strike came at 7 a.m.

Hello fellow anglers, It has been so dang hot that not many have been out fishing lately. With all of this heat, a couple reminders to those that venture outdoors: Beware of the rattlesnakes while you're hiking to that favorite fishing hole. Rattlesnakes are not just in the Carson Valley area, they can be found all the way up through the sierras high up as Kinney reservoir. So watch your step.

Hello fellow anglers. Well I have some good news to share with you. Trout season in Alpine County is officially open as of Friday, May 15, 2020. The county decided to re-access its season opener from the original request of June 1. on Thursday, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife granted the request.

Hello fellow anglers, it was just a few weeks ago I was planning a trip with my cousin to go to the Snake River for a fishing derby in May. So many things have changed and we all will have to adjust to make sure that we can make those plans again. Hopefully in our near future.

Hello fellow anglers. I am here to tell you, Topaz Lake was a great opener this year. The weather on Jan. 1 surprised many anglers as we experienced some extreme winds as well as some good rain in the afternoon. But for those who stuck it out, they were all rewarded with a double rainbow.

Hello fellow anglers, I hope Santa was good to you. We are within a few days of the Topaz Lake opener, which is this Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. The water level is coming up, but still down from last year's opener.

Hello fellow anglers, It is snowing everywhere. Which means that many roads in Alpine County have finally closed for the season. With our recent storms brings ice on some of our surrounding lakes and ponds. I strongly recommend to stay off of the ice, even though our temperatures have plummeted, the ice is very thin and is very dangerous this time of year.

Author Nancy Raven will speak on her book A Postal Journey: Discovering Nevada Through Its Post Offices at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m.

Hello fellow anglers, it is now officially summer time and we are feeling it. When the temperatures reach 90 in Tahoe, It is time to fish the higher lakes. I hope you had a special time last week on Fathers Day.

Hello fellow anglers. It was nice to get a glimpse of spring for a few days. Speaking of spring, next week, Sunday, March 12, is the time we turn our clocks forward one hour for daylight saving time. That, my fellow anglers, will give us that little extra time on the lake. For those anglers that utilize the Douglas County Park at Topaz Lake, here is a little information that may save you some money.

If you’re looking for something to do on New Year’s Day other than sitting on the couch watching football, you should try heading out to the season opener at Topaz Lake. The lake has been closed to fishing since September 30, but it will be open for fishing again on Jan. 1 in one of Nevada's more unique ways to celebrate New Year's Day.

Wind gusts and periods of heavy rainfall are forecast for Carson City and Northwestern Nevada areas, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports.

UPDATE 7:14PM: The Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center (SFIDC) is now reporting the Little Valley to be 55 percent contained, having burned 3,400 acres and destroyed 22 homes and 17 outbuildings since early Friday morning.
More than 660 firefighting personnel remain on scene, the SFIDC reports.
More rain is forecast Sunday night into Monday morning, which should further help firefighting efforts to achieve full containment of the Little Valley Fire.

UPDATE 3:52PM: From South Lake Tahoe, Highway 89 continues to be closed from just beyond the Spring Creek Tract to the Vikingsholm parking lot gate (north side of Emerald Bay) because of the Emerald Fire, which is still 90 percent contained.
As of 3 p.m. Sunday, evacuations have been lifted for Cathedral Road, Springs Creek Tract, Camp Shelly, Camp Concord and Mount Tallac Road.
Cascade Lake and Cascade Properties are currently open to residents only.
In Washoe Valley, Franktown Road continues to be closed below the 6190 street address, because of the Little Valley Fire, which remains at 20 percent contained.
Although Old U.S. Highway 395A has been opened, Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) is asking the public to stay out of the area due to fire traffic, localized flooding from heavy rains and unstable ground from the burn areas.
Interstate 580 is open in both directions to traffic.
Public safety officials said at a 1 p.m. briefing that a re-entry plan has been established, but it will require coordination with fire management personnel, law enforcement, and utility companies before the area can be re-populated safely.
The re-entry plan called for some residents to be allowed back in Monday or Tuesday to survey their properities only. Officials are hopeful re-entry can begin Wednesday.
WCSO will contact displaced residents directly in order to visit their homes.
Fuji Park in Carson City remain open for evacuated residents with large livestock.

Sherry L. Rupert will speak on preserving the Stewart Indian School, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, September 24, at 10:00 am.

For ninety years, Stewart Indian School fulfilled a federal commitment to pursue Native American education in Nevada. Located three miles southeast of Carson City, the school grounds encompassed 240 acres.

Hello fellow anglers, fall is only a few days away. Snow was falling at Kirkwood this week. The time of year to bring extra gear such as warm clothing. The temperatures in our surrounding areas can change rapidly.

Anita Watson will portray Mary Pickford, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, September 7, at 6:30 pm.

Mary Pickford was America’s Sweetheart. Pickford was an actress on the stage and in film, a writer, a producer, a director, and co-founder of a movie studio. She socialized with Hollywood’s most famous stars and married a swashbuckling film hero, Douglas Fairbanks. In 1955, Mary Pickford published her autobiography, Sunshine and Shadows. In this presentation, Pickford will discuss her book and her life.

Historian Steve Davis will speak on a visual exploration of photography and the American West in the nineteenth century, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m.

Author and comedienne Kat Simmons will speak on her book, Kat’s Daily Cups in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, August 28, at 10:00 am.

Kat's Daily Cups is a collection of short stories about raising children, the love of animals, life's challenges, gratitude, inspiration and awakenings.

Author Gary Noy will speak on his book, Sierra Stories: Tales of Dreamers, Schemers, Bigots and Rogues, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, August 14, at 10:00 am.

Steve Hale will portray Stephen T. Mather, first director of the National Park Service, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 10, at 6:30 pm.

Author Guy Clifton will speak on his book Dempsey in Nevada in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 6, at 10 a.m.

Many people are surprised to learn that Jack Dempsey once called Nevada home. Dempsey left footprints all over the Silver State that affected the entire sporting arena.

The Battle Born Civil War Reenactors will present their program, “From Bloomers to Bonnets: A Civil War Historic Dressing”, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 30, at 10:00 am.

The weekend of July 23 and 24 the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park will feature two days of Dangberg family history with a Chautauqua on Fred Dangberg, Jr. and a presentation by his real life grandson Steve “Dink” Achard. Both presentations are free.

Hello fellow anglers, I want to tell you of a place that has over looked by many for years. Many of us pass by as we journey through Hope Valley in Alpine County. Some may view it as a rest stop at Pickett's Junction. In 2001 the All Access Wildlife path was built in partner by the California Fish and Wildlife, Alpine County and the Friends of Hope Valley. It is located at the junction of Highways 88 and 89 in Hope Valley, Calif.

Larry Ford will present “Virgil Earp: The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 20, at 6:30 pm.

Author Mark McLaughlin will speak on his book, Snowbound! Legendary Winters of the Tahoe Sierra, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, July 10, at 10 a.m.

Mark McLaughlin’s latest book is not about meteorology, however it is about weather. In his book, McLaughlin focuses on the top ten biggest winters in the Tahoe Sierra based on snowfall measured at Donner Pass since 1879. He will share amazing weather facts and incredible stories of men and women struggling to cope against some of the most powerful storms on Earth.

Speaker Jim Clark will present his program, “Trains in the Movies”, in a free presentation at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, July 9, at 10:00 am.

Jim Clark is a veteran of more than 250 films, an engineer and a train coordinator. Known as "The Train Man," Clark will give a short history of trains in the movies and explain the technical aspects of working with trains.
