Sizing them up: Children’s resale shop celebrates first year in business

Making that first-year milestone as a business is always noteworthy. One Carson City mother-daughter team counts on the day-to-day growth of their clients for their success.

When it comes to growing toddlers to pre-teens, the demand for clothing is always there. And that’s why Claudia and Anastasia Chambers opened Little Monsters, a children’s resale shop located at 444 E. William St., Suite 1 in Carson City on Dec. 1, 2013.

Final weekend for Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s ‘My Fair Lady’

Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s production of “My Fair Lady” has been hugely successful playing to nearly sold out consecutive shows.
The Reno News and Review gives it five stars: "Fortunately, this production’s lush settings, gorgeous costumes, impressive choreography and talented performers all combine for a show that does everything right."
Three shows remain before the final curtain closes on Sunday, Nov. 23. The shows are in the Bob Boldrick Theater at the Carson City Community Center.

Friends To All volunteers seek names for Santa visits to Carson City area seniors

“Tis the Season” again already! For the 16th Year Friends To All volunteers will dress up in Santa Suits and Helper costumes to bring joy and cheer to senior citizens throughout Carson City.

On Saturday, Dec. 13 these festive groups will log between 150 and 200 stops as they make their rounds visiting and delivering gifts. This year we give special appreciation and honor to the man who inspired our program, Raymond Smith, who passed away in September. Ray’s enthusiasm in bringing the joy of a visit from Santa Claus to so many in our community will live on in our hearts forever.

Carson Creepy Film Festival this Saturday at BAC

Aspiring teams of budding Carson City area filmmakers are hard at work this week developing and putting the final touches entries for the Carson Creepy Film Festival, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, 6 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center.

From comedy to horror, teams were given one week to make a film within the genres of Ghost, Halloween, Monster, Psychological Thriller, Sci Fi, Spiders/Insects, Vampire, Witches, Zombie. All may lean to comedy or horror.

Halloween Costume Party and Mini Pumpkin Decorating

Carson City Library will host a Halloween Costume Party and Mini-Pumpkin Decorating event in the youth department on Monday, Oct. 27 from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm. All ages are welcome. Bring your own mini-pumpkin to decorate; decorating supplies will be provided. A costume contest will highlight the fun-filled event and prizes will be awarded. Costumes are encouraged but must be age appropriate.

Wired Wednesday and Carson TV present THE CARSON CREEPY FILM FESTIVAL competition in the Brewery Arts Center’s Performance Hall. To make a film and enter the competition, register by 5 pm Monday, Oct. 13. Then make your own film. The judged screening will be on Saturday Oct 25 at 6pm in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. Admission to the screening is $5 per person.

Ballet and jazz production of Duke's Place celebrates Nevada's 150th birthday

This exciting new production is designed, written and choreographed by former Prima Ballerina, Rosine Bena, especially for family audiences and is complete with beautiful costumes, sets, drama, humor, fabulous music and exciting dance.

Widows and Waifs: 22nd Annual Ghost Tour Explores the Haunted History of Carson City's West Side

Carson City’s spooky and intriguing history is explored and theatrically relived in the 22nd annual all day Carson City Ghost Walk Oct. 18. Tours depart from the corner of Third and Curry Streets starting at 10:00 AM and leaving every 30 minutes until the last walk at 2:30 PM. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a delightfully entertaining and enjoyable way to experience Carson City’s Victorian Era and diverse history.

6th Annual Cancer Sucks 5K Run Saturday Oct. 4

Join us for the 6th Annual Cancer Sucks 5K Saturday, Oct. 4, 8:00am, 300 S. Curry St. (behind the Firkin and Fox) in Carson City. Run, walk or crawl! Dress up, create a team and just come out and have fun. Costumes are encouraged.
Proceeds benefit the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation’s support of area cancer patients. These funds are used for patients who can't afford unexpected expenses that arise when fighting this awful disease.

RSVP Nevada Day celebration and carnival to celebrate Silver State's 150th birthday

For the 29th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. will sponsor the Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park on Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, 2014, RSVP executive director Susan Haas announced Friday.

Earlier this year RSVP went all out over July 4 with a spectacular fireworks display, synchronized to music, to mark Nevada’s Sesquicentennial. For Nevada Day weekend, visitors can expect plenty of games, thrilling carnival rides and entertainment venues.

“We will have a lot more family fun and entertainment than ever before this year,” said Haas.

Tickets go on sale for Nevada Day Governor's Banquet

Tickets are on sale for the 4th annual Nevada Day Governor's Banquet, Oct. 28 at the Grand Sierra Resort. The event will feature Gov. Brian Sandoval, senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller, Congressman Mark Amodei and Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki. The event benefits The Boys & Girls Club of Nevada.

Tickets are $60 per person, or a reserved table for 10 is just $500. Doors open at 6 p.m. The evening also includes table service dinner, silent and live auctions, and a Nevada 150 birthday cake and cake cutting ceremony.

Nevada 150 Sesquicentennial events lined up through September

The deadline to submit applications for Official and Signature Nevada 150 events will be 5:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead. Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 15 through Aug. 31.

Mad Hatter Garden Party with Corky Bennett Trio Aug. 1 at the Nevada Governor's Mansion

The 2014 Jazz and Beyond - Carson City Music Festival will open Friday, August 1 with a "Mad Hatter Garden Party" featuring music by the Corky Bennett Trio in the backyard of the Nevada Governor's Mansion.

The ticketed party features music, finger foods by Carson City Confections, wine, beer, and a raffle. Festivities run from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Nevada 150 celebrates statehood with events through July

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of July. These Nevada 150 celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held July 18 through July 31.

Monthly swing dance party

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop, 6-10 pm July 26 at the Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Vintage 1950s-‘60s dance music will be played, and costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests and door prizes. Cost is $5 for car show participants, $7 for members of HSSDC and Reno’s Biggest Little Swing Dance Club, $10 general for individuals and $15 for couples.

Annual Powwow Celebrates Nevada's Rich, Native History

Stewart Indian School in Carson City hosts its annual Father’s Day Powwow, Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, and is one of the sanctioned 150 events celebrating Nevada’s Sesquicentennial – 150 years of statehood. Everyone is invited to experience the beauty and significance of Nevada’s Native American heritage through traditional dance competitions, music and elaborate costumes of this wonderful, rich culture.

Public Invited to DIS Performance of 'Romeo & Juliet'

Spend time talking with students in Michelle Crain’s drama class at Dayton Intermediate School and it’s not long before one realizes the recurring theme is “we’re family.”
As the students relentlessly rehearse ahead of their public performances of “Romeo & Juliet,” taking place Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17, the ties that bind while challenging at first, have been woven into a tapestry of unconditional acceptance, tolerance, care and dependability, qualities not always readily seen on a school campus.

'Chicago' to hit the stage May 9-18 in Carson City

Murder. Corruption. Greed. Fame. And all that jazz. The Western Nevada Musical Theater Company brings the sizzling Broadway blockbuster, Chicago, to Northern Nevada on weekends, May 9-18 at the Carson City Community Center.

Set in the windy city during the roaring 1920's, the show follows the stories of two murderers - nightclub singer Velma Kelly, who kills her husband and sister when she finds them cheating on her; and aspiring vaudeville singer Roxie Hart, who murders her lover for promising to get her into show biz, only to get her into bed.

Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping Carson City in the wintertime

For several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of January or February to escape the cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime. This year was no exception, except, sadly, there is no snow.

We had been invited to be guests at the home of my cousin Lorraine and her husband Bob Scholes of Dayton, who spend the winter months in Indio, Calif.

Blinky Man Halloween Report

Continuing the energy of the Blinky Man Summer Solstice event, Carson City’s costumed night time bike ride with lights was at it again this Halloween. At least 30 riders participated in the first ever Blinky Man Halloween event.
