Caitlin Jemma: Cosmic cowgirl who brings The Goodness

“A connection with nature and the cosmos were always fundamental for me,” Caitlin Jemma says. “As a teenager I didn’t appreciate it as much. But in retrospect, I’m really glad I had time in nature.”

The promising young singer and songwriter was raised on a country acre of land in the hillsides outside of Virginia City.

2001: A Space Odyssey – 50th Anniversary Review

We need a break from politics. So, it’s our good fortune this month marks the 50th anniversary of perhaps the most remarkable film ever, producer/director Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Even more than Gone with the Wind, it was the most revolutionary film. It was radically different from everything before it, and it influenced all film after it more than any other work. Yet, nothing made since 1968 is really like it, either.

Leaves turning, wind blowing, and all things pumpkin sprouting up everywhere. It is absolutely autumn in Northern Nevada. Get ready for Halloween with your choice of pumpkin patches. Seeliger Elementary School is hosting theirs for the twenty-fifth year in a row. Take a trip on the V and T Steam Train at the Nevada Railroad Museum, actually take several trips. The annual Harvest Train event offers an all-day wristband that allows for as many rides as you’d like, in addition to museum admission. So many more fun activities are available to you, you’ll have to read on to see them all.

Fundraiser Sunday in Carson Valley for family of fallen Carson City sheriff's deputy Howell

A fundraiser will be held Sunday for the family of fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell at the 5 Clover Ranch in the Carson Valley.

The all-day fundraiser will feature special guest Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt and a video appearance by actor Joe Mantegna, of "Criminal Minds" and "The Simpsons." Headlining band will be Lavish Green. One hundred percent of the profit proceeds from the benefit will be presented to the Howell family.

If you have the kind of luck that brings rain as soon as you wash your car, please drive over to Squeaky’s Car Wash at the corner of Highway 50 E and Lompa Lane. It’s their opening weekend and they are offering free car washes and raising funds for the Carson City Community Counseling Center.

If you consider yourself adventurous, then the Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry in Virginia City is for you. It’s not nicknamed the Testicle Festival for nothing! If you need some liquid courage, take part in the Ball Breaker Saloon Crawl. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade heads down C Street at noon.

Power outages affect thousands of NV Energy customers overnight

Wake up this morning with your clocks out of sync? No, it wasn’t a dream through the cosmic space-time continuum warp and it wasn’t that you missed Daylight Saving Time — you didn’t. It is still a month out yet. It was a power outage.
