Celebrating Nevada Day in safety and style, the successful statewide socially distanced pop-up performances concluded in Reno and Carson City with multiple stops. The activation, designed to inspire the community to download and adopt the COVID Trace contact tracing app, resulted in five times the usual daily downloads indicating the community is motivated to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

Hello to everyone in Carson City. My name is Destiny Hernandez, and I am a senior at Carson High School. Just like all of the other seniors here at the school, I am working on my Senior Project, a graduation requirement, in order to benefit not only myself but also those animals in the community who need a home.

Carson High School cheerleaders cheered as they entered Walmart in Carson City and then performed two more cheers on top of that. There is an old saying found in a very old book which says, “You have not because you ask not.”

Grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School in Carson City temporarily experienced a reprieve from their day-to-day academic endeavors last week when several community partners and local dignitaries visited classrooms to read to students.

For my 2019 Senior Project, a Carson High School graduation requirement, I chose to be the coordinator and director of the annual junior cheer camp because I want to increase my knowledge and understanding on how to put on a special event; I also desire to improve my personal leadership, communication, and delegation skills.

On Sept. 9, the Carson High School Senators Cycling team competed at Rattlesnake Roundup, a Hidden Valley race course.

This annual event is hosted by the SLHS Cheerleaders at Sierra Lutheran. Students will learn cheers, jumps, and a band dance, then perform at the half-time of the Sierra Lutheran JV boys game for the whole family to come watch! (at no additional cost!). Cost is $30 per student, $25 for each additional sibling. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to local resident Aunicka Pierce, an 11-year-old recently diagnosed with bone cancer. Great news for Carson High School students as Librarian Ananda Campbell is making sure her library stays cutting edge.

Campbell was awarded both the Library Services and Technology Act Community Enrichment Grant from the Nevada State Library and Archives and the Carson City School District Schools Foundation Mini Grant Teacher Award to help fund Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Projects and to assist in facilitating an ever-changing CHS Senators Library Collaborative Learning area.

Muscle Powered, Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City, recently received a $2000 grant from Nevada Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board to facilitate a video competition to create public service announcements about the dangers of texting and driving.

Here is an updated parade list for all the entries in the Nevada Day Parade on Saturday. Note, there was a last-minute change in streets where the entries are supposed to line up that is different than the printed program. The change was made to accommodate some larger floats. Unforgettable and exciting, this is how the Carson High School Homecoming celebration week began. Students enjoyed all the fun and festivities that began at 1 p.m. last Friday as every student in the school hustled to the big gym to prepare for and celebrate everything from the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to the upcoming crowning of the 2017 Homecoming Queen and King.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. Lend a hand to Muscle Powered this morning as their monthly Trash Mob tackles the Linear Park Trail. Keep reading for great ideas on how to have some fun.

Carson High School students worked tirelessly over the previous eight months to prepare for Carson City community volunteers, many of them CHS graduates who completed the Senior Project themselves, to evaluate both their portfolios and their speeches to be delivered Saturday.

Holy moly, it’s going to be a busy weekend: busy and gorgeous out. A bowling tournament and the Comstock Shootout Soccer tournament have the hotels and motels busting at the seams. Celebrate Earth Day with Muscle Powered by making a small piece of Carson City that much cleaner; the trash meets at 8 a.m. and leaves you plenty of time to enjoy the day. Rummage and book sales, live music, a fun run and a half-marathon, comedy and so much more await you. Check out the list for all the ways to embrace the sunshine.

Have you ever had one of those weeks? Well, thank goodness it's Friday. Carson City will help you decompress and forget your troubles. Students, K-12 and University, will enjoy the free swim day at the Carson Hot Springs. The Carson Nugget is turning into quite the downtown hotspot with a different headlining comedian each Friday, in addition to live music in two places. Check out their newest offering, the Beer Bar, during tonight's grand opening. So much more awaits you today, you'll just have to see what strikes your fancy.

Bringing an American reality television series to CHS Business Students is another reason why Carson High School is a cutting edge high school. Thanks to teachers Billy McHenry and Angila Golik as well as Carson City community professionals, students are offered real life experiences.

I hope you got your fill of naps last weekend because this weekend is chock full of fun to be had for all. You can Wine Walk until you Holiday Crawl downtown. Take your pick of craft shows in town. Kids won’t want to miss the Santa Train at the State Railroad Museum or one of the two performances of ‘The Peanutcracker’ at the Community Center. Whether you’d like to spend the days indoors or out, there is something for all ages in the Carson City area this weekend.

Carson High School will be hosting its annual Holiday Craft Fair this weekend, Friday, Nov. 18 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is free for children and K-12 students. Adults, admission is Friday $2 and allows re-entry on Saturday; Saturday's admission is $1.50, with a discount if you bring something non-perishable for their food drive.

In light of recent political events, which need no commentary here, two rival high schools engaged in an equally important contest that set the standard for gracious rivalry to show this embattled country how it is done on the day after the election.

For Carson High senior Peter Garrett, his soccer dreams are being lived in early December, when he will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, from the 1-4.

First thing in Monday night’s Presidential debate, moderator Lester Holt told a whopper that illustrates the left-wing bias of lamestream media pundits and how they concoct completely false narratives to serve that bias and promote statist-liberal Democrats.

I can understand if your plans for the weekend include sitting half-naked in front of a swamp cooler with an icy beverage. It has been quite roasty these last few days. Let me, however, attempt to lure you out with this weekend’s event list; there is plenty of fun to be found around the valley. Some of your options even include air conditioning and icy beverages.

If you haven’t made it to see Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s production of Disney’s The Aristocats, Kids, or the Carson High spring musical, ‘Kiss Me, Kate.’ what are you waiting for? Keep your eyes peeled for Girl Scouts, this is the last weekend of cookie sales.

The Sierra Lutheran High School Cheerleaders are hosting their annual Mini Falcon Cheer Camp (for boys and girls grades K-5) on Saturday, February 6th, from 1:00-4:30pm. Performance at a Girls Varsity Game is included in the program (Game starts at 4:00pm; the attendee’s family will be admitted at no cost). Students will learn cheers, a band dance, jumps, and participate in a craft. Cost is $35 per student ($25 for each additional sibling), and includes poms for girls, megaphones for boys, and a snack).
