Thursday, Oct. 27: Things to do in Carson City

If today is any indication of how hard it is going to choose between fun activities, we have a tough few days ahead. The Carson Tahoe Spooktacular is an annual favorite for the kids, complete with treats, activities, and helicopers. It’s Family Night at the RSVP Nevada Day Carnival: thanks to Carson City Toyota-Scion, all rides are just $1. Dayton offers a Haunted Hayride through their old town history. Costumes are encouraged for this family fun event. Root beer floats await at the grand opening celebration of the newly renovated FISH.

“Heeere's Johnny!” The Shining returns to the big screen today at the Galaxy Theater, so get a jump on the weekends chills and thrills with some cult classic horror. For something much more family friendly, a Halloween Party at the Library includes fun crafts and a costume contest. Author Sandie LaNae of Thin Veil Investigators is the featured presenter tonight at Washoe Lake State Park. She’ll be discussing some of her discoveries in ‘Weird, Haunted Virginia City.’ A fun night of jazz awaits at Living the Good Life with Tom Stryker’s Impromptu. Huntsman Cancer Institute and Carson Tahoe Cancer Center: Working Together to Advance the Cancer Moonshot

Earlier this year, a national “moonshot” to defeat cancer was announced at the State of the Union. I was gratified to see rural cancer care issues included in this conversation. Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah has long emphasized working to ensure that individuals who live in rural areas can access cancer screening, treatment, and prevention resources.

This is challenging work, but thanks to commitment from other high-quality health care organizations, we are improving cancer care in rural communities.

It's Your City: NAMI helps with addressing mental health issues in Western Nevada

This week's edition of It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer features Jessica Flood, the Regional Behavioral Health Coordinator for Carson Tahoe Health. She discusses the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI, and how families and those with mental health issues can get help with support and resources here in Western Nevada.

Senator Square: Inaugural 'Week of Respect' a success at Carson High School

Carson High School celebrated its first Week of Respect Oct. 3-7. Students and staff participated in daily activities promoting positive interactions to support a safe and respectful learning environment. Highlights of the week included interactive game stations where students gathered in Senator Square and engaged in board games and brain teasers.

Plans for an 88,000 square-foot senior living and skilled nursing and rehabilitation care center in Carson City that will be built in an agreement between Carson Tahoe Health and Prestige Care have been finalized with a ground breaking scheduled for later this month.

HopeFest6 Carson City: Free outdoor concert Friday to benefit local cancer patients

HopeFest6, a free outdoor concert with headliners, “The Waybacks” is set for Friday at Carson Tahoe Cancer Center. All proceeds from food, refreshments and raffle ticket sales directly benefit local cancer patients undergoing lifesaving medical treatment, providing support for basic needs that go beyond the hospital walls.
