April showers are bringing some unusual blooms to the Legislative lawn. Join Prevent Child Abuse Nevada and Advocates to End Domestic Violence in the annual planting of the pinwheels. We should have a break from the rain by then, but it’ll still be a windy day. Stick around downtown for a special tour of our historic Capitol with Muscle Powered. The storm won’t stop the fun to be found in the valley tonight. They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. We’ve survived the freakish lamb-lion hybrid of March and we’ve survived the week, so let’s celebrate. Laugh it up with Kathleen Dunbar or Geechy Guy; Carson Comedy takes over the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall as well as their regular venue inside the Nugget. Spring break week is winding to a close, and it’s ending on a soggy note. More of the wet stuff is on its way, but don’t let that stand in the way of a good time. Laugh it up with magician and comedian Brad Bonar Jr. at Carson Comedy in the Nugget. Break a leg to the Proscenium Players. Their spring production, ‘Bus Stop,’ opens tonight in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. The whole family is welcome at the DHS Boosters Bingo Night at Dayton High tonight; help them raise funds for this year’s Safe and Sober Grad Night.

Irish eyes are smiling on us: it’s going to be a gorgeous day. You won’t have to look far for some green beer, whiskey, or corned beef – there will be St. Patrick’s Day parties all over. Live music is on the menu, as well. Choose from Men of Worth at the Brewery Arts Center, an all ages punk show at Sassafras, or Stereo Galaxy in the McFadden Plaza, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The brave ones will be at the St. Baldrick Fundraiser at Red’s Old 395 where you’ll see some heads shaved for a good cause. Where ever you end up, just make sure you have a plan to get home safely.

Our favorite red-headed orphan sings that ‘the sun’ll come out tomorrow.’ Luckily we don’t have to wait: for the sunshine or for the Wild Horse Children’s Theater’s production of Annie, Jr. You’ll find the musical at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall this weekend and next. Kids are welcome to make a free craft or decorate a St. Patrick’s Day Cookie at Genoa Candy and Coffee. Go on an ‘American Road Trip’ at the Plaza Hotel as part of their Mike Thompson Lecture Series. The sun is shining on Carson City and all sorts of fun is blooming. It’s a great day for the kids with the Kerak Shrine Circus in Reno, cookie decorating at Genoa Candy and Coffee, and a Father-Daughter Dance at Dayton High School. Show some love to Carson High Senior Amber Reeves: she’s displaying her photography at the Brewery Arts Center for her Senior Project. Carson City Arts Gallery introduces their monthly Artist Reception tonight by welcoming Kathleen Osborne Flanagan. The nightlife tonight features music, karaoke, dancing, comedy and more. Keep reading for an amazing day.

Even if the weather doesn’t agree, there is a spring thaw in our midst. Carson City is picking up the pace, and there’s fun to be had all over. You’ll always find a great comedian at the Carson Nugget on Fridays: this week it’s funnyman Steve Bruner. Head to Sassafras for a fun time with Sacramento indy band, Poindexter. Tonight’s performance by the Brigham Young University's International Folk Dance Ensemble in the Community Center Theater is a special treat. Keep reading: there is so much more.

As the three-day Presidents' Day weekend begins, Carson City has much to offer. Carson Comedy does a double-dose tonight with Rick D’Elia at the Carson Nugget and Craig ‘The Lovemaster’ Shoemaker at the Brewery Arts Center. World Dance Open Floor at Comma Coffee is like an open mic for dancers. Travel the world with the annual International Film Weekend at the Community Center; it's free and also features local Independent films. Karaoke, live music, dancing and more round out tonight's options.

It's the first Friday of February and things are heating up. Not literally, mind you, that silly groundhog predicted more winter is on its way. Plenty of live music tonight will have you moving and grooving: Mo'z Motley Blues at Living the Good Life, Pawnshop at Westside Pour House, and Decoy at the Max Casino to name a few. Several new art exhibits are opening tonight, so make the rounds to the CCAI Courthouse Gallery, the Carson City Visitor Center, and Paradise Salon Spa Wellness if you want to hit them all.

Finally Friday, Carson City. January is coming to a close, and personally, I’m hoping for an early spring. Let’s enjoy the last weekend before February with some live music. Drinking with Clowns hit the Sassafras stage at 8 p.m. – get there early for dinner and a good seat. Comma Coffee can fill you up with coffee, beer, tea, and some soulful songwriting. A to Zen is open to anyone and everyone that wants an audience. Skate to your own tune at the Arlington Square Ice rink: today is the last day to glide and slide.

I wish everyone luck keeping their triskaidekaphobia at bay. The number thirteen is nothing to fear, even when it falls on a Friday. (I’m not going to lie: triskaidekaphobia is one of my favorite words and I very rarely get the chance to use it in a sentence.) Mother Nature has thrown us for a loop this week, and we deserve the chance to enjoy the break in the storm. Take the family down to the Library for their game corner, or cheer on the talented cast of ‘The Lion King, Jr.’ at the Community Center.

Bring your friends or make some new ones at our fun gaming night. We are hosting a weekly Magic: The Gathering tournament and a oneshot tabletop gaming event. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase during the event.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library and will take place after the Carson City Library closes at 5 pm. The library's Digitorium will open at 5:15 pm for participants to set up for the event.

Chautauqua performer Steve Hale will present “George Whittell, Jr." at the Dangberg Historic Ranch Home, Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. This is a free outdoor event. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or use one of the park’s chairs. Dogs are not permitted in the park, with the exception of certified service animals.

Casinos in Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville and all other areas of Douglas County with the exception of South Lake Tahoe, took in a gaming “win” of $8,637,614 for the month, as compared to $8,049,618 in March 2014. Statewide, Nevada gaming revenue in March fell 3.15 compared to March 2014.

Carson City Library will be a busy place for youth and teens all month-long during the green month of March. Storytime will continue on Thursdays, March 5, 12, 19, and 26. Two storytimes are available at 10:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. in the library’s Digitorium.

If you are like Elaine and I, I would be willing to bet that by now, you are feeling trapped in your home by our winter weather. As a die-hard winter addict, I personally love cold days, frosty nights, frigid temperatures, deep snow, thick ice, long hours of darkness and the starkness of our landscapes in the wintertime.

However, I must candidly admit that our winter this year has not had the deep snow and ice that I dearly love.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m., Mr. Whittell will pay a visit to the Gold Hill Hotel from his summer retreat at the Thunderbird Lodge on Lake Tahoe. He will undoubtedly have some stories that include Bill the Lion, his elephant Mingo, surviving World Wars I and II, and his six custom Duesenberg luxury cars.

Whittell is played by Steve Hale in first person and costume. In the Chautauqua you may be the first to hear about his big plans for his 30,000 acre estate and 27 miles of shoreline on the Lake!

If you are like me, I would be willing to bet that by now, you are feeling trapped in your home by our winter weather.

And, as a die-hard winter addict, I love cold days, frosty nights, frigid temperatures, deep snow, thick ice, long hours of darkness and the starkness of our landscapes in the wintertime. However, I must admit that sometimes our winter season even wears me down a little bit.

So, when I am tired of browsing on the internet, playing card games on my computer and feel like the walls are closing in on me, I take some remedial action that you, too, might try.
