Capital City Arts Initiative’s relationship with Carson High School made it possible for Caleb Cage, a West Point graduate, U.S. Army veteran and author to visit with CHS students where he read one of his short stories from his 2017 book "Desert Mementos: Stories of Iraq and Nevada" and then fielded questions about writing and his background.

Drizzly, dreary, cool weather that has made its mark on the Carson City area so far this month may only seem like bad tidings approaching the Ides of March. But I think Leprechuans would agree: The wetter the weather, the brighter the rainbow.

This weekend calls for a celebration, because the first Saturday of March is upon us and that means the Carson City Downtown Business Association Wine Walk come rain, snow, wind or shine. And get this: Today's Wine Walk is the last one before Spring.

Not only is Friday the first day of March in this 2019 calendar year but it is also the end of the work week. And for this we say welcome to a month that brings us the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, which is this Saturday, NCAA basketball playoffs, St. Patrick's Day celebrations and the first day of spring. The hills around the Nevada state capital are alive with the sound of music and nature as the Carson City Symphony performs its 200th concert Sunday at the newly renovated Bob Boldrick Theater.

CARSON CITY — In their heydays in the boom-and-bust mining culture of the late 1800s, the mining camps of Aurora, Nevada and nearby Bodie, California had a combined population of nearly 20,000.

Keeping the thriving camps supplied was an ongoing challenge.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City is hosting holiday gift making classes for children ages 8-15 in two, one week sessions in December.

Though it would take some seriously intense research to prove the following, it is believed by many the Carson City community is the most supportive group of people in the country. Hyperbole, maybe, but Carson High School senior Nik Hylan, in fulfilling his graduation requirement, is asking the community to give a gift of blood and receive a free gift this holiday season.

CARSON CITY — USDA Rural Development State Director Phil Cowee announced Tuesday that residents in 15 of Nevada’s rural and frontier counties will gain access to healthcare through recently approved federal broadband grants.

Organizers of a campaign to collect items for Carson City's homeless are hoping locals will give what they can over the next two weeks as a way to help those individuals and families living on the street.

The number of homeless adults and children continues to rise in Carson City, Nev. From those with mental illness, drug addiction, those that choose they don't want public assistance and remain in the camps, rising costs and shortage of rentals; too the large group that wants the help to get off the streets.

Highway 395 from Walker to Bridgeport and State Route 108 over Sonora Pass remain closed Thursday due to the Boot Fire, which remains out of control and burning along the Walker River northwest of Bridgeport in Mono County, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
