Amodei amendment would shift funds to VA Regional Offices with largest backlogs

Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei offered a successful amendment on Tuesday to the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs Appropriations bill for next year, which would shift $44 million for mandatory overtime to the VA Regional Offices with the worst disability claims backlogs — greater than 365 days.

Of the 15 VAROs on the list, Reno’s backlog, with an average claims process of 504 days, is the second worst in the nation behind Los Angeles (576 days). The amendment passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 248 to 172.

Nineteenth annual Lassen-Applegate Emigrant Trail Ride

The High Rock Trekkers 4X4 Club will host its 19th annual Lassen-Applegate Emigrant Trail Ride, Friday, July 19 through Monday, July 22, 2013.

This trip is open to all four-wheel drive enthusiasts including owners of stock sport utility vehicles (SUV). The 200-mile historical journey will begin near Imlay, NV and follow the same wagon train route used by Peter Lassen in 1849.

SUV owners invited to follow pioneer tracks at 19th Lassen, Applegate Emigrant Trail Ride

Wagons Ho! Just imagine an SUV trek for the entire family that traces the same route used by 8,000 early pioneers in more than 1,500 covered wagons from 1849 to 1852 that brought a flood of immigrants to California, most of whom had the Gold Rush fever.

The overland emigrant trip would take five to six months crossing mountains, deserts, rivers, and some of the most hostile country in the world.

Boaters planning to launch at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day Weekend are reminded to arrive at one of five watercraft inspection stations clean, drained and dry in order to get through the inspection process and out on the water more quickly.

All boats entering Lake Tahoe without a Lake Tahoe wire inspection seal are required to go through a mandatory inspection and purchase an inspection sticker as part of the public, private, multi-agency effort to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species (AIS). Western Nevada College to graduate its largest class Monday

CARSON CITY — For the fourth consecutive year, Western Nevada College will graduate its largest class in history. The class of 2013 is 505 students strong, with 530 degrees and certificates being issued.

Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.

With the Opening Day of the 2013 California fishing season right around the corner on Saturday, April 27, if you are planning to fish on the Opening Day or the entire Opening Weekend, this is a special reminder that you will need to possess the proper 2013 license to be legal.
